Grand Junction, Colo. – Adams State Volleyball ended day two of the Maverick Fall Classic dropping games to Minnesota State University Moorhead 3-1 and Cal Poly Humbolt 3-0.
In the first game of the day, Adams State faced a tough challenge against MSU Moorhead, falling 3-1 in a four-set match at Brownson Arena. Despite a strong start, winning the first set 25-18, the Grizzlies could not maintain momentum as MSU Moorhead rallied back to win the next three sets: 25-13, 26-16, and 25-18.
Adams State struggled with efficiency in the last three sets hitting .194, .113, and .150 after starting stronger at .213. MSU Moorhead struggled initially only hitting .051 in the first set but quickly rebounded in the second set attacking .438, followed by .229 and finishing strong at .364.
Anna Huggins led the Grizzlies offensively putting up 14 kills, followed by Ariel Barrera with 11 and Katie Bauer with 10. Defensively, Adams State recorded 78 digs with Keely-Shae Sapiga recording 19 for the Grizzlies.
In the second match of the day, Adams State battled against Cal Poly Humboldt but fell in straight sets, 25-23, 25-23, and 25-20. Despite the close scorelines, which featured 21 score ties and 7 total lead changes, the Grizzlies struggled to close out the sets.
Anna Huggins was once again a standout for Adams State, contributing both offensively and defensively. Peyton Priddy and Keely-Shae Sapiga worked hard to keep Adams State in the match, but Cal Poly Humboldt's more consistent attacking and crucial serves gave them the edge. Despite the Grizzlies efforts to rally late in each set, Cal Poly Humboldt was to much to overcome.
