Goodwell, Okla. – Adams State women's soccer picked up its first win of the season with a 2-0 victory against Oklahoma Panhandle State University. The Grizzlies outshot OPSU 16-2 on their way to the win.
"It was a great team performance. We were able to play everyone and not lose a beat. It is nice to get back into our stride," said head coach Alex Greco.
Adams State struck early, scoring in the 15th minute, with Karlee Caballero finding the back of the net for her second goal of the season. Caballero's goal gave the Grizzlies a much-needed early lead, which they maintained throughout the game. Despite a few chances from Oklahoma Panhandle, Adams State goalkeeper Lianna Albert remained untroubled for most of the first half.
In the second half, Adams State continued to press, and in the 61st minute, they were rewarded with a second goal from Caballero, who scored directly from an unassisted corner kick.
"It is pretty cool, as it was the first multiple-goal game of my college career. I wish I could have gotten the hat trick, but I have already tied my personal record for goals in a season, so it's been a great start to my last season. After today, I'm excited to see what our team can do in conference. We have so much potential and are on a mission to make Adams State history," said Caballero.
Adams State outshot Oklahoma Panhandle 16-2, with 12 shots on target. Oklahoma's goalkeeper, AlaraLynn Gunderson, was busy all game, making 10 saves to keep the scoreline respectable. However, Oklahoma Panhandle couldn't break through Adams State's solid defense, with only one shot on goal, which was saved by Albert late in the match.
The Grizzlies will play again on Saturday, Sept. 21, against Sul Ross State University at 1 p.m. The women's team will also celebrate Senior Day before the match.
