Adams State Falls to Sul Ross St. in Second-Half Surge, 3-0

ALAMOSA, CO — Despite a strong first half defensive effort, Adams State fell 3-0 to Sul Ross State University in a match held at the ASU Soccer and Lacrosse Field on Saturday morning.

Both teams entered halftime with the score locked at 0-0, with Adams State (1-3-0) doing well to limit Sul Ross St. (4-1-0) to just three shots in the first period. However, Sul Ross came out firing in the second half, scoring three goals in a dominant 45 minutes to claim victory.

The scoring started just after halftime when Sul Ross St.'s Diego Hernandez capitalized on a penalty kick in the 46th minute, giving the visiting team a 1-0 lead. Adams State struggled to recover, with their only shot on goal coming late in the second half, a chance saved by Sul Ross's goalkeeper, Isaac Poole.

Sul Ross extended their lead in the 67th minute as Mario Hurtado netted another goal. Carlos Gonzalez would then seal the win in the 76th minute, returning the favor with a goal of his own, assisted by Hurtado, bringing the final score to 3-0.

Adams State struggled offensively, managing only five shots all game, with one on target. The Grizzlies' best chances came from Berend Heijmans and Avery Richards in the first half, but they were unable to convert. Goalkeeper JP Fernandez made two saves but could not stop the Sul Ross attack in the second half.

The match saw two yellow cards: Matteo Branger of Adams State in the 58th minute, and Hurtado for Sul Ross in the 64th minute.

Adams State will travel to South Dakota Mines next Friday before coming home to play on Sunday against Colorado Christian.
