Wichita Falls, Texas — The Adams State volleyball team kicks off its 2024 season on Thursday, Sept. 5, at the Midwestern State Tournament, facing the host Mustangs in its opening match. The game is set to begin at 6 p.m. MT (7 p.m. CT) at D.L. Ligon Coliseum. The Grizzlies will play the sole match on Thursday.
With 10 returning players and a new head coach, the Grizzlies look to build on the 8-18 overall record they posted in 2023. Adams State will return all three RMAC All-Conference honorable mentions — Anna Huggins, Natalie Gallegos, and Cindy Garcia. However, Gallegos will not be on the court this season as she is recovering from knee surgery.
On Friday, Sept. 6, Adams State will play Western New Mexico at 10 a.m. MT (11 a.m. CT) and Northwestern Oklahoma at 2 p.m. MT (3 p.m. CT), before wrapping up the tournament by facing Southern Arkansas at 12 p.m. MT (1 p.m. CT) on Saturday, Sept. 7.
The tournament will be full of new experiences for the Grizzlies, with three of the four games against opponents Adams State hasn't faced in years. The last time they played Midwestern State was Sept. 4, 1999, when Adams State won 3-1. They last played Western New Mexico in 2019, also resulting in an Adams State victory. With an overall historical record of 7-14, the Grizzlies hope to improve to 8-14 this weekend. This will be their first matchup against both Northwestern Oklahoma State University and Southern Arkansas University.
