Gunnison, Colo. – The Adams State Grizzlies kicked off their dual season at the Tracy Borah Duals in Gunnison, competing against the Newberry College Wolves and the Simon Fraser University Red Leafs.
Grizzlies vs. Newberry Wolves
The Grizzlies started strong against the Newberry Wolves. No. 3-ranked Isaiah Gamez opened with a pin at 125 pounds, defeating Hunter McCullough in the second period at 4:15, earning the Grizzlies 6 team points.
At 133 pounds, Adam Concepcion delivered a dominant performance, defeating Ethan McCullough by major decision with a score of 11-2, adding 4 more points for Adams State.
However, No. 4-ranked Angel Flores fell to Braden Tatum at 141 pounds by a major decision, 14-3, giving the Wolves their first 4 points.
At 149 pounds, Keiran "Spesh" Thompson wrestled a tough match against Caelan Alderman, securing a 9-5 victory in sudden victory overtime and earning 3 points for the Grizzlies.
No. 6-ranked Aaden Valdez kept the momentum going at 157 pounds, defeating Dennis Virelli by major decision, 11-2, while allowing only two escapes. His performance added 4 points to the team score.
Levi Deaguero was unstoppable at 165 pounds, overpowering Nick Humphrys with a technical fall, 20-3, for 5 more Grizzlies points.
At 174 pounds, Daniel Long faced No. 20-ranked Dayton Fields but fell by major decision, 10-1.
Sergio Zaragoza put up a strong fight at 184 pounds against No. 18-ranked Andrew Reed but narrowly lost, 8-6.
At 197 pounds, Will Aucoin wrestled No. 6-ranked John Parker-Wilson and fell by pinfall at 2:59.
Heavyweight Abraham Garcia rounded out the lineup at 285 pounds but fell to Kale Schrader by pinfall in 1:57.
Despite their efforts, the Grizzlies narrowly fell to the Wolves with a final score of 23-22.
Grizzlies vs. Simon Fraser Red Leafs
The Grizzlies rebounded strongly in their second dual against Simon Fraser.
At 125 pounds, Isaiah Gamez came out firing, pinning Marques Calapiz in just 39 seconds to secure an early 6 points.
Adam Concepcion received a forfeit at 133 pounds, adding another 6 points to the Grizzlies' tally.
At 141 pounds, Angel Flores responded decisively with a pinfall victory over Jagvir Grewal at 2:16, earning 6 more team points.
Keiran Thompson continued the offensive streak at 149 pounds with a technical fall victory over Ryan Hicks, 19-3, giving the Grizzlies 5 points.
At 157 pounds, Aaden Valdez battled Magnus McCrackin in a tight match, emerging victorious by decision, 9-8, to add 3 more points.
Elijah Olguin got the start at 165 pounds and picked up a forfeit win, adding another 6 points for Adams State.
At 174 pounds, Levi Deaguero wrestled a hard-fought match against Peter McCrackin but came up just short, losing 7-6, giving Simon Fraser their first 3 points.
At 184 pounds, Sergio Zaragoza faced Owen Gudmundson but fell by decision, 8-5.
Wil Aucoin, wrestling at 197 pounds, earned a quick pin over Arashk Rasti at 2:01, earning 6 more points for the Grizzlies.
At heavyweight, Abraham Garcia finished the dual against Sam Pereira but fell by pinfall at 2:04.
The Grizzlies dominated the Red Leafs with a commanding 38-12 victory, improving to 1-1 in dual action.
