Grizzlies Battle in Home Triangular, Split Duals Against RMAC Opponents

Alamosa, Colo. – The Adams State Grizzlies wrestled two duals in the Den at Plachy Hall to open their home slate. The triangular featured two RMAC opponents, the CSU Pueblo ThunderWolves and the San Francisco State Gators.

CSU Pueblo 22, Adams State 19

Isaiah Gamez kicked things off at 125 pounds in a highly defensive match against Rhys Sellers. Gamez showcased his grit and edged Sellers with a 4-3 decision, earning the Grizzlies three team points.

At 133 pounds, Adam Concepcion battled Eddie Bowman of the ThunderWolves in a tightly contested match. The two were neck and neck throughout, but in overtime, Concepcion got caught in poor position and was pinned at 7:21.

At 141 pounds, Angel Flores put on a stellar performance, winning a high-scoring match against Aleksander Gunn. Flores secured a major decision victory, 13-3, allowing Gunn only three escape points and adding four points to the Grizzlies' team total.

Wrestling at 149 pounds, Kieran "Spesh" Thompson struggled to get his offense going and fell to Kevin Boston of the ThunderWolves by a 7-1 decision.

At 157 pounds, standout Aaden Valdez dominated CSU Pueblo's Cyruss Meeks. Valdez controlled the match and secured a pinfall victory at 4:57, earning six points for the Grizzlies.

The 165-pound match was a thriller, featuring Grizzly wrestler Levi Deaguero and the ThunderWolves' Aaron Concepcion. Concepcion scored two early takedowns to take the lead, but Deaguero responded with a perfectly executed headlock, scoring near-fall points to turn the match around. Deaguero capitalized on the momentum and pinned Concepcion at 4:48, securing another six points for the Grizzlies.

At 174 pounds, Daniel Long faced CSU Pueblo's Solomon Arnds-Volcin. Long struggled early, giving up quick takedowns, but rallied with a reversal and a four-point near-fall, nearly securing a pin. Despite the excitement, Long ultimately fell in a hard-fought 13-9 decision.

At 184 pounds, Sergio Zaragoza wrestled Donn Greer in a match interrupted multiple times by Greer's blood time. Zaragoza couldn't build momentum and lost by decision, 12-6.

Wil Aucoin wrestled Remington Winmill at 197 pounds in a slow-paced match that went into overtime after a 5-5 tie in regulation. Both wrestlers battled for the decisive takedown, but Winmill prevailed with an 8-5 sudden victory.

At heavyweight (285 pounds), Abraham Garcia faced Henry Stum in the final match of the dual. The match began slowly, but Stum eventually found his offense, defeating Garcia by major decision, 14-1.

Adams State 31, San Francisco State 16

In a dual that featured three falls and a major decision for the Grizzlies, the action started early at 125 pounds with Isaiah Gamez scoring a takedown in the first period against Evan Kusumoto. Gamez jumped ahead early and never conceded, adding an escape in the second period before securing a takedown and a near-fall in the third to win by major decision, 12-1, earning four points for the Grizzlies.

At 133 pounds, Adam Concepcion fought hard but ultimately fell by decision, 3-2, to Zach Wright. After Wright scored a takedown early in the first period, Concepcion was unable to score a takedown of his own.

Angel Flores fell to Johnny Lopez by major decision, 8-0, tipping the points total in favor of San Francisco State.

At 149 pounds, Kieran "Spesh" Thompson defeated Sean Yamasaki 3-1. After heading into the second period tied 0-0, Thompson got the offense going with an escape before turning the match around in the third period with a two-point near-fall.

With his second pin of the day, Aaden Valdez, wrestling at 157 pounds, defeated Zane Stoddard by fall in 3:54. After scoring a takedown and a four-point near-fall in the first period, Valdez took control and never relented.

Keeping the momentum going, Levi Deaguero, wrestling at 165 pounds and coming off a first-place finish at the Western State Open last week, defeated Illia Borshchenko by fall in 3:47.

Daniel Long, at 174 pounds, added six more points for the Grizzlies after earning a forfeit.

At 184 pounds, Sergio Zaragoza lost a tough match by decision, 7-3, to Kweli Hernandez-Maitre. After Hernandez-Maitre earned two takedowns in the first period, Zaragoza was unable to get any offense going, scoring his only points off escapes.

Wil Aucoin scored the final points of the dual for the Grizzlies, earning a fall over Gavin Funk at 197 pounds in 3:38. Getting the offense going early, Aucoin scored two takedowns and two two-point near-falls in the first period before locking up Funk early in the second to secure the pin.

Abraham Garcia fell to Felipe De Matos in 2:36 to end the day for the Grizzlies.
