Los Lunas, N.M. – The Adams State University softball team opened its 2025 campaign with a pair of tough losses on Friday, falling to Western New Mexico and West Texas A&M in day one of the season-opening tournament.
Game 1: Western New Mexico 10, Adams State 4
Adams State got off to a promising start against Western New Mexico, scoring early and collecting nine hits in the game. The Grizzlies plated four runs over the first three innings, led by a two-run double from Malia Coit and a triple from Kaylee Eyl.
Despite the offensive effort, Adams State struggled to contain Western New Mexico's bats. The Mustangs struck for 10 runs on 10 hits, capitalizing on six walks issued by Adams State pitching. Aubree Davis took the loss in the circle, allowing 10 earned runs over six innings.
Game 2: West Texas A&M 33, Adams State 0 (5 Innings)
Game two proved to be a challenge for the Grizzlies as they ran into a dominant West Texas A&M squad. Adams State was held to just two hits and struck out 10 times, unable to break through against a strong Lady Buffs pitching staff.
West Texas A&M's offense exploded for 33 runs on 22 hits, including five home runs. The Grizzlies also committed three errors in the game. Pitchers Celie Page and Brooklyn Burgess had a tough outing, as the Lady Buffs capitalized on 12 walks and five extra-base hits in the shortened five-inning contest.

Adams State (0-2) will look to bounce back on Saturday as they continue play in Los Lunas. The Grizzlies will face Sul Ross State and Eastern New Mexico tomorrow before facing off against Western New Mexico again on Sunday.
