GRAND JUNCTION, Colorado — In a hard-fought defensive battle between the Colorado Mesa Mavericks and Adams State Grizzlies, Adams State falls just short, losing 1-0 to the Mavericks. The tough loss for the Grizzlies puts them at a record of 6-5-2 (2-4-1 RMAC) with 5 remaining games in the regular season as the Grizzlies continue their playoff push late in the season.
In today's defensive battle, an early goal by the Mavericks at the 01:17 mark was the difference maker in today's game as the final score was 1-0. Olivia Barrett scored the lone goal for the Mavericks; it was her second goal of the season. The only other offense on the day was the 8 more shots by the Mavericks, 4 of which were on goal, and the 2 shots by the Grizzlies, neither of which was on goal. Outside of the few shots on goal, it was a true defensive showcase by both Adams State and Colorado Mesa.
The story of the day was truly the defense by both teams. The Mavericks were able to almost entirely stop the Grizzly offensive attacks as Adams State only collected 2 shots, 1 by Keira Robertson and the other by Grace Abbott. The Grizzlies also played great defense, holding the great Maverick offense to only 1 goal on the day and 5 shots on goal. Helping anchor the Grizzly defense was their goalie, Ashlyn Bartley, who played a great game as she saved every single shot on goal the Mavericks had, outside of the one early in the game where Colorado Mesa was able to score their lone goal.
Overall, today's match for the Grizzlies was truly hard-fought as Colorado Mesa came into the match as the leading team in the RMAC with a record of 9-2(5-0 RMAC). Along with being the top team in the RMAC standings, the Mavericks are also currently the number 20 team in the nation, making today's match one of the hardest matches the Grizzlies have had all season.
Up next for the Grizzlies is their match next week on Friday, October 24th, against Metro State. The match will be played in Denver, Colorado, at Metro State's home field and will be played at 6 PM MST. The match against the Roadrunners will be a great opportunity for the Grizzlies to get their playoff push back on track, as Metro State is currently 1-7-6.
