Kearney, Neb. – The Adams State men's wrestling team turned in a strong showing at the Younes Hospitality Open on Saturday, sending six athletes into action across four weight classes at the University of Nebraska–Kearney.
At 165 pounds, Aaden Valdez battled through a deep bracket to earn a fifth-place finish. Valdez opened his day on a tear, stacking two decisions and a fall to move into the later rounds. He dropped his next two matches to opponents from Northern Iowa and UNK, but secured fifth place after advancing via forfeit.
Ben Tonnessen put together one of the Grizzlies' most impressive runs of the day, taking second place at 197 pounds. He rolled through the early rounds with decision wins of 5–0, 8–4 and 8–3, punching his ticket to the finals. Tonnessen came up just short in the title bout, falling 4–2 to UNK's Jackson Kinsella.
The highlight of the tournament for Adams State came at 125 pounds, where Isaiah Gamez dominated his way to the championship. Gamez opened with a major decision, then delivered back-to-back pins to advance into the semifinals. He added another major decision — a 12–4 win over Wyoming's Isaiah Harrison — before edging Nebraska's Alan Koehler in a hard-fought 9–7 final to secure the title.
Adams State returns to competition on Dec. 7 at the Bob Smith Open, hosted by Fort Hays State University.
