Indianapolis, Ind. – Adams State men's wrestling placed two competitors on the podium on the final day of the 46th Midwest Classic, highlighted by a championship performance from Aaden Valdez.
After advancing six wrestlers to day two, the Grizzlies battled through a demanding final day of competition and came away with two top-three finishes in one of the nation's toughest tournaments.
At 157 pounds, Valdez put together a dominant run to the title. He opened the day with a 6-0 decision over Nico Taddy of West Liberty in the quarterfinals, then capped his tournament with a 5-2 victory over Easton Worachek of UW–Parkside in the finals. Valdez controlled the match from the start, carrying a 3-2 lead into the third period before sealing the win with an escape and a riding-time point to claim first place.
At 125 pounds,
Isaiah Gamez secured a third-place finish after advancing to the quarterfinals on day one. Gamez earned an 11-1 major decision in the quarterfinals before suffering a fall in the semifinals. He responded with resilience in the consolation bracket, earning a default victory in his first match before pinning Anthony Aniciete of Tiffin in 2:50 to take third place.
With the Midwest Classic complete, the Grizzlies now turn their attention to the holiday break before opening the new year in January.
