ALAMOSA, Colo. – The Adams State men's wrestling team battled against Colorado School of Mines on Saturday but came up short in a 25-13 dual loss. The Grizzlies claimed victories in four weight classes, but forfeits and key wins by the Orediggers in the upper weights proved to be the difference.
Colorado School of Mines 25, Adams State 13
At 125 pounds, No. 5-ranked Isaiah Gamez set the tone for Adams State, securing a 6-3 decision over No. 12-ranked Christian Lopez to give the Grizzlies an early lead.
The Orediggers responded at 133 pounds, where Trebor Moreno defeated Adam Concepcion in a 5-1 decision to even the score. Concepcion limited Moreno's offense but was unable to generate his own, managing just a single escape point in the loss.
At 141 pounds, No. 9-ranked Angel Flores delivered a statement victory with a 7-1 decision over No. 4-ranked Grayston DiBlasi. Flores controlled the match with sharp offensive attacks, dominant mat returns, and over a minute of riding time, securing a big upset for the Grizzlies.
The momentum continued at 149 pounds, where Kieran Thompson wrestled a disciplined match to defeat Carson Dulitz 8-1. Thompson allowed just a single escape point while displaying relentless offensive pressure.
No. 6-ranked Aaden Valdez extended Adams State's lead at 157 pounds, delivering a dominant 9-0 major decision over No. 18-ranked Marcus Caro. Valdez's control on top was a key factor, as he amassed over three minutes of riding time to put the Grizzlies up 13-3.
From there, Colorado School of Mines took control. The Orediggers earned six points at 165 pounds with a forfeit win by No. 20-ranked Jakob Smith, cutting the deficit to 13-9.
At 174 pounds, No. 13-ranked Wyatt Reisz swung the momentum further in Mines' favor with a fall over Dallas Porter at 6:23, giving the Orediggers their first lead of the night at 15-13.
Mines extended its advantage at 184 pounds, where Mason Diel secured a 17-3 major decision over Sergio Zaragoza, pushing the lead to 19-13.
At 197 pounds, Jeffrey Morosini added to the Orediggers' total with an 11-4 decision over Josh Coon.
Heavyweight Cade Whish sealed the dual for Mines with a 7-3 decision over Ronan Melani. Melani scored an early takedown but was unable to build on the momentum, as Whish controlled the remainder of the match to secure the 25-13 victory.
