Adams State Softball Drops Conference Opener Against Black Hills State

Alamosa, Colorado — The Grizzlies opened up conference play today in the first game of a four-game set against Black Hills State University. The Grizzlies fell by a score of 14-4 in six innings. The loss puts the Grizzlies at 2-9 overall and 0-1 in RMAC play.

Black Hills State came out swinging it as they were able to pull out to a quick 7-1 lead after two innings. The Yellowjackets were able to score 1 in the first but then added another 6 in the second inning before the Grizzlies could respond with their offense.

Whitlock opened up the scoring for the Yellowjackets collecting an RBI on a double to right center. This was then followed by a double by Dowden that cleared the bases in the second inning scoring three, a single again by Whitlock that scored one, and lastly a homerun Pauwels that scored another two giving Black Hills a 7-0 lead. The Grizzlies were able to respond in the bottom half of the second when Caylie Eiguren scored on a fielder's choice by Ali Davis. Unfortunately, the Yellowjacket bats were just too hot for the Grizzlies to keep us as they were able to score another 4 runs before the Grizz could score again.

The Grizzlies did show some life in the fourth inning as they were able to add three runs on a Sydney Rodriguez double to center field, and an Aubrey Davis double to right center. Rodriguez's double scored Emily Sauvageau, and Aubrey Davis's double scored both Jayden McBride and Ellie Heiser. The late Grizzly scoring was not quite enough as the Yellowjackets held their lead, actually adding on again in the sixth inning with a late 3-run homerun to put the Grizzlies to rest.

Starting in the circle for the Grizzlies was freshman Brooklyn Burgess who ended up throwing a complete game for the Grizzlies. Burgess ended with a final line of 6 innings, 17 hits allowed, 14 runs(13 earned), and 1 strikeout. The loss puts Burgess at 0-1 on the season.

The Grizzlies will look to bounce back tomorrow as they finish their four-game series with Black Hills State with a triple-header. The second game of today's doubleheader was postponed till tomorrow at 10 AM MST which is what makes tomorrow a triple-header for the two teams. The final three games of the series will determine who wins the season series and starts conference play with a strong start. All three games will again be played in Alamosa, Colorado at the Grizzlies home field.
