Grizzlies Drop Three in a Tripleheader Against Black Hills State

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 | Box Score 3 Alamosa, Colorado — In a Sunday Tripleheader the Grizzlies dropped all three games against Black Hills State University. The first game's score was 20-17, the second game was 5-0, and the series finale was 6-5. The three losses drop the Grizzlies to 2-12 overall and 0-4 in RMAC play.

Black Hills State 20, Adams State 17

Offense was the story of the first game of the Tripleheader with 37 runs being scored and 30 hits being recorded. Adams State finished with 14 hits, and Black Hills finished with 16.

Both teams started the day very hot with Black Hills scoring 11 in the first two innings, while Adams was able to score 7 in the first two, following up with a 5-run inning in the third giving them a 12-11 lead. Unfortunately, the Grizzly pitching could not stop the Yellowjacket offense as they responded again with a 6-run inning in the top of the fourth inning giving them a 17-12 lead. The Grizzlies were able to tie the game in the bottom of the sixth inning with a 3-run inning in the fourth inning, and a 2-run inning in the sixth but unfortunately once again the Yellowjacket offense responded after the Grizzlies scored taking the lead back in the top of the seventh inning with a 3-run inning of their own. This was the final blow for the Yellowjackets as they were able to close the game in the bottom of the seventh inning taking the first game of the day.

Offensively the Grizzlies were led by great performances by Kaylee Eyl, Grace Hendrickson, Aubree Davis, and Sydney Rodriguez. These four women accounted for 14 of the 16 RBIs the Grizzlies totaled in game one. Eyl set the table for the Grizzly offense leading off and reaching base 3 times while also scoring 3 runs, collecting 3 RBIs, and hitting a double. Hendrickson followed suit with another 5 RBIs, a homerun, a total of 3 hits, and 4 runs scored. Then Davis and Rodriguez both collected another 3 RBIs, and a total of 3 more Grizzly hits between the two.  Davis also threw a complete game along with her great offensive day for the Grizzlies.

Unfortunately, free passes hurt Davis in the circle as she walked 9 batters, and hit another 2 that kick-started the Yellowjackets to a great offensive day. Although Davis had a rough day in the circle she still was able to collect 8 strikeouts against the Black Hills offense which was a career-high for her in the two years she has thrown for Adams State.

Black Hills State 5, Adams State 0

Game two of the day was a completely different game compared to the first as there was only 1 run scored between both teams through the first 5 innings of the game. Both the starting pitching for the Yellowjackets and Celie Page the starter for the Grizzlies threw extremely well. Unfortunately, the Yellowjacket offense caught fire in the final two innings scoring 4 runs giving the Yellowjackets game two by a final score of 5-0.

Looking closer at the performance by the Freshman Page, she collected her second complete game in the circle throwing all 7 innings for the Grizzlies. This was her best appearance of the year and the least amount of total runs she has given up all year, only surrendering 5 runs to the Yellowjacket offense. During her 7 innings of work, she surrendered 11 hits, walked none, and collected 2 strikeouts. Despite a great start by the Freshman, the loss puts her at 0-4 on the season.

Unfortunately for the Grizzlies offense, Peskey the starter for Black Hills had her A stuff inside the circle throwing a complete game shutout against the Grizzlies. Peskey only surrendered 6 baserunners which included 5 hits by the Grizzly offense and 1 walk. Peskey also had the strikeout working for her as she collected 11 over her 7 innings of work. The win puts her at 4-1 on the season.

The Grizzly offense was led by Kaylee Eyl, Brylyn Haddick, and Makenzie Simon. The three women combined for 4 of the Grizzlies 6 baserunners and were the only three women not to strikeout during the game. Eyl and Simon both collected triples, with Simon collecting another single to give her two hits on the game and a total of 5 hits through the first two games of the Tripleheader after her three-hit game in Game 1 of the day. Haddock came off the bench and came up with a single in her one plate appearance on the day.

Black Hills State 6, Adams State 5

The series finale and final game of the Tripleheader was a nail-biter going into the final inning. The score was 5-5 going into extra innings when the Yellowjacket offense came up clutch with an RBI sac fly by Hernandez in the top of the eighth inning to give Black Hills the late 6-5 lead. Unfortunately, the Grizzly offense could not come up with the clutch hit after Makenzie Simon started the inning with a leadoff double. Adams State was able to get Simon to third after a successful sac bunt by Ali Davis but Peskey the starter for the Yellowjackets was able to get two huge strikeouts to finish the game sealing the series sweep for Black Hills.

In the circle, both Peskey for the Yellowjackets and Aubree Davis for the Grizzlies were able to throw extremely good games. For both starters, it was their second start of the day after Peskey started Game 2 for the Yellowjackets and Davis started Game 1 for the Grizzlies. Peskey finished with a line of 8 innings, 12 hits allowed, 1 walk, 5 runs surrendered, and 7 total strikeouts. For the Grizzlies Davis threw one of her best games of the season also throwing 8 innings. Davis only allowed 7 Yellowjacket hits but just like Game 1 was again snake-bitten by the free passes she surrendered, walking 8 and hitting another. 3 of the runs that Davis surrendered reached on a free pass which limited her ability to get the win. The loss puts Davis at 0-2 on the season, and the win puts Peskey at 5-1.

Looking at the offensive side of the game for the Grizzlies they were led by great performances by Kaylee Eyl, Emily Sauvageau, Caylie Eiguren, and Aubree Davis. Eyl reached base twice on the day and collected 2 RBIs on a bases-clearing triple in the sixth inning that tied the game for the Grizzlies at 5-5. Sauvageau accounted for three hits leading the Grizzlies in the game, with Eiguren and Davis collecting another two each for a total of 7 of the 12 Grizzly hits on the day.

The story for the Grizzly offense was the lack of an ability to get the clutch hit with runners on base. The Grizzlies outhit the Yellowjackets 12-7 in Game 4 but left 9 base runners on during today's finale limiting their ability to score runs early in the game.
