Alamosa, Colo. — Jude Tapia scored a team-high 27 points, and Adams State used a second-half surge to defeat New Mexico Highlands 104-92 on Thursday night at Plachy Hall.
The Grizzlies (9-13, 4-10 RMAC) outscored the Cowboys 60-49 after halftime, pulling away in the final minutes to secure the win. Tapia shot 7-for-13 from the field, including 3-for-8 from three-point range, and was perfect from the free-throw line (10-for-10).
Ta'Veus Randle added 19 points, hitting three three-pointers, while Luke Williams chipped in with 16 points and three assists. Adams State capitalized on its opportunities at the free-throw line, making 26 of 33 attempts.
Nathan Hasberry led New Mexico Highlands (8-13, 1-12 RMAC) with a game-high 30 points, shooting 10-for-14 from the field. Blessin Kimble added 18 points and five rebounds, but the Cowboys struggled with foul trouble, committing 24 team fouls and losing three players to disqualifications.
The teams were tied 44-44 at halftime, but Adams State's defense tightened in the second half, forcing 14 total turnovers and turning them into 20 points. The Grizzlies also got strong contributions from their bench, which accounted for 32 points.
Adams State will look to build on the victory when it faces Western Colorado on Thursday.
