Adams State Drops Three Games in Weatherford, Including Resumed Contest

WEATHERFORD, Okla. – It was a tough day for Adams State baseball as the Grizzlies wrapped up a three-game stretch against Southwestern Oklahoma, finishing a postponed game from Friday before playing a scheduled doubleheader on Saturday. Adams State came up just short in the resumed contest, falling 6-5, before dropping both games of the doubleheader, 10-2 and 5-3, at the Athletic Complex.

Resumed Game: Southwestern Oklahoma 6, Adams State 5

Before taking the field for their scheduled doubleheader, the Grizzlies first had to complete the game that was postponed from Friday due to darkness. Adams State entered the day tied 5-5 in the ninth inning and was unable to secure the win, falling 6-5 on Saturday.

The game was gridlocked from the start with neither team able to take a solid lead throughout. Phil Carter took the loss on pitching, falling to 1-1 on the season.

Game 1: Southwestern Oklahoma 10, Adams State 2

Adams State (2-7) struggled offensively in the first full game of the day, managing just four hits in a 10-2 loss. The Grizzlies took an early lead in the second inning when Josh Parks and Luke Mariscal both came around to score. Ethan Abegg delivered the only RBI for Adams State.

However, the Bulldogs responded with two runs in the second and fourth inning and didn't look back, adding six more runs in the fifth frame to secure the victory.

Starting pitcher Phil Carter (1-2) took the loss, giving up four runs on eight hits over four innings. The Adams State bullpen struggled to keep the game close, allowing six runs in relief.

Game 2: Southwestern Oklahoma 5, Adams State 3

The Grizzlies put together a stronger effort in the series finale but fell short once again, 5-3.

Southwestern Oklahoma struck first, taking a 1-0 lead in the second inning, but the Grizzlies quickly answered with a run in the top half of the third when Brayden Watkins was brought in by Seth Reker. The Bulldogs pushed ahead with three more runs in the fifth.

The Grizzlies fought back in the sixth, closing the gap to 4-3 after a clutch pinch-hit RBI double by senior catcher Nolan Marthaler. However, Southwestern Oklahoma tacked on an insurance run in the bottom of the frame and held off Adams State's late push.

Brian Walters (1-1) took the loss, allowing four runs on four hits over five innings while striking out two.

The Grizzlies will head to Wayland, Texas to take on Wayland Baptist next weekend.
