Colorado Springs, Colorado — In game one of a four-game series against the University of Colorado Springs, Colorado, the Grizzlies take game one by a score of 11-7. The win puts the Grizzlies at 9-18(5-4 RMAC).
The game started with bang with both the Grizzlies and the Mountain Lions scoring in the first inning with the Grizzlies scoring 1 in the top half and the Mountain Lions scoring 6. In the top half of the inning, the Grizzlies scored after
Braden Watkins started the game off with a lead-off double and
Seth Reker was able to bring him in after Watkins reached third base. Reker hit a sacrifice fly to right field that gave the Grizzlies the early lead. Unfortunately for the Grizzlies, the Mountain Lions responded immediately with a 6-run first inning giving them a 5-run lead. The Mountain Lions hit two home runs in the first inning which allowed them to take the early lead.
After the first inning,
Cesar Loma was unhittable for the Grizzlies throwing 5 scoreless and only allowing 2 hits the rest of his outing. Loma ended with a final line of 6 innings, 6 runs allowed, 8 hits, zero strikeouts, and one walk. After Loma finished his outing,
Justin Arellano came into the game and threw the final 3 innings of the game. Arellano recorded his first save of his career and only allowed 1 baserunner during his 3 innings of work. Arellano finished with a final line of 3 innings, 1 hit allowed, 1 run allowed, 2 strikeouts, and zero walks.
Offensively for the Grizzlies, they were able to respond after the Mountain Lions put up 6 in the first inning by scoring 5 runs in the top half of the second inning to tie up the game at 6-6. The Grizzlies were led by a
Christian Altamirano home run, an
Ethan Abegg double, and a single by
Josiah Hall. After the 5-run inning, the Grizzlies were able to take the lead in the top of the fifth inning when they scored 2 runs to take an 8-6 lead after a
Caleb Eiguren single and a Macs Carillo double. The scoring continued for the Grizzlies in the 7th inning when they were able to add 3 more runs giving them an 11-6 lead which they were able to hold on to for the remainder of the game.
Free passes were the story of today's game as the Grizzlies won the freebie war with the Mountain Lions. Adams State only allowed 1 free pass the entire game which was a walk by Loma early in the game, whereas the Mountain Lions allowed 6 walks and hit a batter giving them 7 free passes in the game. These free passes allowed the Grizzly offense to get rolling, allowing them to get clutch hits and score their 11 runs in the game.
Looking towards tomorrow, the Grizzlies will again play the Mountain Lions in a doubleheader that will start at noon MST with the second game following shortly after the first game. The Grizzlies will look to build off of Friday's game one win in games two and three of the series.
