Colorado Springs, Colorado—In a Saturday doubleheader, the Grizzlies split the two games with the UCCS Mountain Lions. In game one, the Grizzlies lost by a score of 8-4, and in the second game, they pulled an insane comeback and won 24-22. The doubleheader split puts the Grizzlies at 10-19(6-5 RMAC).
Mountain Lions 8, Grizzlies 4
In game one of the doubleheader, the Grizzlies jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead in the first inning after RBI singles by Phil Carter and Christian Altamirano. Unfortunately, the Mountain Lions responded immediately in the bottom half of the first with 4 runs of their own, giving them a 4-2 lead. In their 4-run inning, the Mountain Lions were able to collect 3 extra-base hits that gave them the momentum to take the lead.
After the Mountain Lions scored their 4 runs the Grizzlies were able to tie the game up in the third inning after a Seth Reker 2-run home run to right field. The home run was Reker's first home run of the year. Sadly for the Grizzlies, the UCCS pitching staff was able to start making consistent pitches after the home run shutting down the Adams State offense for the rest of the game. Adams State was only able to collect three hits the rest of the game, scoring no more runs allowing the Mountain Lions to take the lead later in the game and take the win.
For the Grizzlies Brian Walters started the game finishing with a line of 4 ⅓ innings, 12 hits allowed, 7 runs(6 earned), 1 walk, and 6 strikeouts. Finishing the game for the Grizzlies was Logan Martin who finished the final 1 ⅔ innings for Adams State, allowing 2 hits, 1 run(zero earned), and striking out 2. The Grizzlies' pitching staff had the strikeout working, collecting 8 over 6 innings but unfortunately, this did not limit the Mountain Lions' success as they were still able to collect 14 hits in the game and 8 total runs.
Offensively for the Grizzlies, they were led by Ayden Tauscher and Seth Reker who both collected 2 hits on the game and accounted for 4 of the Grizzlies 8 total hits. Tauscher finished the game going 2 for 4 and scoring 1 run, while Reker finished 2 for 3 with a home run, 2 RBIs, and 2 runs scored.
Grizzlies 24, Mountain Lions 22
In game two of the doubleheader, the Grizzlies made an incredible comeback in which they were able to come back from a 10-run deficit two separate times in the game. To start the game off the Grizzlies were able to jump out to a quick 4-0 run lead but just like games one and two they gave the lead back to the Mountain Lions in the bottom half of the first. UCCS scored 5 runs in the first taking the lead and followed it up with a massive 9-run inning in the second which gave them their first 10-run lead of the game going up by a score of 14-4.
After UCCS took their first 10-run lead the Grizzlies were able to slowly chip away, giving them energy for the rest of the game. In the top of the third inning, Adams State came out swinging, scoring 6 runs. The Grizzlies' 6-run inning was led by a Josh Parks 2-run double, two RBI singles by Josiah Hall and Nolan Marthaler, and an RBI walk by Ayden Tauscher. The Grizzlies' response did not stop UCCS from continuing to score runs as they jumped out to their second 10-run lead of the game after scoring another 6 runs in the bottom of the third making the score 20-10.
The Grizzlies were able to finally hold the Mountain Lion offense down once Phil Carter came into the game and put up three straight zeros. Carter's three zeros allowed the Grizzly offense to slowly chip away in the final four innings of the game in which the Grizzlies scored in every single inning. Adams State started with 3 runs in both the fourth and fifth innings and followed this up with 4 in the sixth and seventh innings finally giving them the lead in the top of the seventh.
The Grizzly offense was led by a multitude of guys who had outstanding days as they collected a total of 20 hits and 8 walks. Josiah Hall, Josh Parks, Christian Altamirano, and Nolan Marthaler all came up huge for the Grizzlies as the four hitters combined for 18 of the 23 Grizzly RBIs, along with 12 hits, and 12 runs. The four young men also combined for 4 doubles and 2 home runs on the day. It was a truly outstanding day for the Grizzly hitters as they broke out in a huge way scoring a season-high 24 runs.
Closing the game out for the Grizzlies was Tyler Addington who collected his fourth save of the year. Addington finished with a final line of 1 innings, 2 hits allowed, 2 runs(1 earned), and 1 strikeout. Yet again Addington was lockdown for the Grizzlies when they needed it as he continues to have a great senior season.
