Pueblo, Colo. – The Adams State softball team took the field for a the first doubleheader of the series against CSU Pueblo on Friday. The Grizzlies bounced back in game two after a tough opener, earning a split on day one.
Game 1: CSU Pueblo 8, Adams State 0 (5 Innings)
The Grizzlies struggled to generate offense in the first game of the doubleheader, mustering just three hits in a shortened five-inning contest due to the run rule. CSU Pueblo capitalized on early scoring opportunities, plating two runs in the first inning and breaking the game open with three-run frames in the fourth and fifth innings.
Brooklyn Burgess took the loss in the circle for Adams State, allowing eight earned runs on nine hits over 4.2 innings. Offensively, Kaylee Eyl, Emily Sauvageau, and Grace Hendrickson recorded the only hits for the Grizzlies, with Sauvageau's double being the lone extra-base hit.
Game 2: Adams State 7, CSU Pueblo 5
Adams State responded in the second game, using a six-run fifth inning to rally past CSU Pueblo and secure the victory. The Grizzlies entered the inning trailing 2-0 before erupting for six runs, sparked by clutch hitting and key defensive miscues from the ThunderWolves.
In a massive outburst in the fifth inning, the Grizzlies capitalized on a passed ball and a walk to score two runs before catcher Caylie Eiguren added two RBIs, while Kaylee Eyl had a strong day at the plate, going 3-for-5 with a double and an RBI. Mackenzie Simon finished the game off for the Grizzlies with a solo home run in the seventh inning.
Aubree Davis delivered a complete-game performance in the circle, working through seven innings while allowing five earned runs on 10 hits. Despite some late pressure from CSU Pueblo, Adams State held on, adding an insurance run in the seventh to seal the 7-5 win.
With the split, Adams State moves to 4-20 overall and 2-12 in RMAC play. The Grizzlies will look to take their first series win of the season tomorrow, when they face CSU Pueblo for another doubleheader starting at 11 a.m.
