ALAMOSA, Colo. – The Adams State Grizzlies opened their conference series against Colorado Mines on Friday afternoon, falling in a narrow 5-4 contest. Despite a promising start and late-game heroics, the Grizzlies were unable to hold off the steady offensive attack from the Orediggers.
The Grizzlies wasted no time getting on the scoreboard, putting up three runs in the bottom of the first inning. Braden Watkins had a ground rule triple to lead off the inning. Ayden Tauscher followed with an RBI double, bringing in Watkins, and Christian Altamirano added an RBI groundout Josiah Hall launched a solo home run to give Adams State to cap off the big inning, putting the Grizzlies ahead 3-1 after one frame.
However, Colorado Mines responded with consistent offensive pressure, scoring runs in five separate innings to gradually chip away at the lead. The Orediggers scored in the top of the first and then again in the third, fourth, and fifth innings, evening the score at 3-3. A crucial run came in the fifth inning when Canon Humphreys singled to left field for an RBI., pushing Colorado Mines ahead 4-3.
Adams State's pitching staff fought hard to keep the game within reach. Starter Cesar Loma put in a solid performance, going six innings while allowing three earned runs on seven hits. Relievers Phil Carter and Justin Arellano did their best to contain the Orediggers' bats, but the timely hits from Colorado Mines proved to be the difference-maker.
The Grizzlies attempted to rally in the ninth inning, as Carter launched a solo homered to bring the game within a run. However, the Orediggers' bullpen managed to shut the door, stranding the potential tying run and securing the victory.
Offensively, Adams State finished with seven hits, with B. Watkins leading the way with a three-hit performance, including a triple. Despite the strong start and late-game fight, the Grizzlies left seven runners on base and struggled to find key hits in the middle innings.
With the loss, Adams State drops to 4-15 on the season and 0-1 in RMAC play, while Colorado Mines improves to 6-12 (1-0 RMAC). The Grizzlies will look to bounce back as the series continues, hoping to even the series in Game 2, kicking off at 11 a.m. tomorrow pending weather.
