Grizzlies Take Two Rough Losses at The Hands of Colorado Pueblo

Pueblo, Colorado — In a Saturday doubleheader, Adams State drops both games to Colorado Pueblo. In game one, the Grizzlies fell 7-4, and in game two, they fell 10-6. The two losses put the Grizzlies at 17-28(13-14 RMAC).

Colorado Pueblo 7, Adams State 4

In game one of Saturday's doubleheader, the Grizzlies jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead after the second inning. They scored first in the opening inning with a Josiah Hall sacrifice fly, then added two more runs after Colorado Pueblo's starting pitcher walked the bases loaded and their third baseman committed a two-out error, putting the score at 3-0. Unfortunately for the Grizzly offense, Colorado Pueblo managed to get on a roll, tossing another three innings while giving up just one more run, which allowed Pueblo's offense an opportunity to catch up.

After the top of the second inning, Colorado Pueblo responded to the Grizzlies' 3 runs by scoring 5 of their own in the second and third innings. In addition to the 5 runs scored in those innings, Pueblo added 2 more in the sixth, clinching the game with a final score of 7-4.

On the mound for the Grizzlies was Logan Martin, who pitched all six innings. Despite a tough outing, Martin pitched much better than his final line suggests. His final line was 6 innings, 11 hits, 7 runs (6 earned), 2 walks, and 5 strikeouts. Unfortunately for Martin, his misfortune resulted in a loss in game one, placing him at 0-1 for the season.

Offensively, the Grizzlies struggled, managing only two hits throughout the seven-inning game. Chris Gracia recorded a double, and Jorden Rico hit a single up the middle. With such a slow offensive performance, the Grizzlies could not keep pace with Pueblo's offense, leading to their loss.

Colorado Pueblo 10, Adams State 6

In game two of the doubleheader, the Grizzlies fell behind early as Cesar Loma, the Adams State starter, struggled. Loma gave up 5 runs in the first two innings before being taken out of the game and replaced by Connor Murray. With Loma struggling, his line was only 1 ⅓ innings, 4 hits, 5 runs, 5 walks, 1 hit batter, and 1 strikeout. After Loma exited the game, Murray pitched strongly for the Grizzlies, holding Pueblo's offense to only 3 runs (2 earned) during his 3 ⅓ innings of work. With Murray holding firm on the mound, the Grizzlies managed to bounce back, taking a 6-5 lead after falling behind 5-0 following the first two innings. The Grizzlies regained the lead after a Braden Watkins 3-run home run, a 2-run single by Nolan Marthaler, and another RBI by Watkins in the fourth inning. Unfortunately for the Grizzlies, the 6 runs were not enough as the Thunderwolves slowly responded after the Grizzlies took the lead, eventually achieving a final score of 10-6.

Offensively, the Grizzlies were led by Braden Watkins, who finished 1 for 4 with a home run and 4 RBIs. Alongside Watkins, Chris Gracia, Ethan Abegg, and Nolan Marthaler all contributed significantly, combining for 4 of the Grizzlies' hits and 3 of the 6 runs. Gracia particularly shined today alongside Watkins, going 2 for 3 with 2 doubles and 1 run scored.

Looking Forward

Looking towards tomorrow, the Grizzlies will finish their four-game series with Pueblo with a nine-inning game that will be held again at Rawlings Park, Pueblo's home field. The game will start at noon MST. The Grizzlies will look to respond tomorrow after two tough losses today, looking to take one game from the four-game series before the weekend finishes.
