Alamosa, Colo. – The Adams State softball team closed out its series with New Mexico Highlands by splitting Monday's doubleheader on April 7. After falling in the opener, the Grizzlies bounced back with a hard-fought win in Game 2, but ultimately dropped the series, 3-1.
Game 1: New Mexico Highlands 8, Adams State 0 (6 innings)
The Cowgirls rolled to an 8-0 win in the opener, backed by a dominant performance from pitcher Jazymyn Griego. Adams State had opportunities, loading the bases multiple times, but came up empty and stranded eight runners.
Emily Sauvageau led the Grizzlies' offense with two hits.
On defense, Adams State committed just one error but couldn't contain the Cowgirls' bats. New Mexico Highlands struck early, scoring three runs in both the first and fifth innings, and adding one more in the third and sixth.
Celie Page went the distance for the Grizzlies, striking out two while allowing eight runs on seven hits over six innings.
Game 2: Adams State 8, New Mexico Highlands 7
Adams State snapped a 19-game losing streak in dramatic fashion, edging the Cowgirls 8-7 in Game 2. The teams traded early runs in the first inning before the Grizzlies exploded for four in the third to take control.
The Cowgirls battled back to tie the game in the fifth, but Adams State answered with two clutch runs in the bottom of the sixth to regain the lead for good.
The offense was fueled by standout efforts from Emily Sauvageau and Raegan Johnson, who each tallied two hits and two RBIs. Sauvageau reached base in all three plate appearances, while Johnson delivered a key inside-the-park home run in the sixth to help seal the win.
Aubree Davis earned the complete-game victory in the circle, allowing seven runs on 14 hits while striking out one.
