Grizzlies Fall in Season Opener at Western New Mexico, 35-21

Silver City, N.M. — Adams State struck first and struck fast, but a second-half surge by Western New Mexico proved too much as the Grizzlies fell 35-21 in Saturday night's season opener at Ben Altamirano Field.

The Grizzlies (0-1) built an early 14-0 lead behind a balanced offensive attack. Tyson Smith connected with Devin Dawkins on a 7-yard touchdown pass in the first quarter, and sophomore running back Elijah Harris III broke free for a 40-yard rushing score midway through the second.

Western New Mexico (1-0) answered with two quick scores before the half, including a last-second 21-yard touchdown pass, trimming Adams State's advantage to 14-13 at the break.

In the third, Smith found Geovonni Ribalta on a 27-yard strike to extend the Grizzlies' lead to 21-13. The Mustangs responded on the ensuing drive with an 11-yard touchdown through the air, setting the stage for a decisive fourth quarter.

Western New Mexico controlled the final frame, grinding out a 93-yard drive capped by a one-yard touchdown run, then capitalized on a short field to add another rushing score, sealing the 35-21 victory.

Smith finished 11-of-19 for 112 yards and two touchdowns, while Ribalta led the receiving corps with four catches for 51 yards and a score. Harris III paced the ground game with 52 rushing yards and a touchdown on just three carries.

Defensively, Adams State showed toughness throughout, recording 69 total tackles and four sacks. Junior linebacker Mafileo Tupou led the way with a game-high 16 tackles and one sack. Nicolas Mendez and Seth Moss also added sacks as the Grizzlies pressured the Mustang backfield all night.

Adams State finished with 274 yards of total offense compared to Western New Mexico's 405. Turnovers proved costly, as the Grizzlies lost four fumbles and threw two interceptions.

The Grizzlies return home next Saturday, Sept. 6, for their home opener at Rex Stadium.
