Alamosa, Colo. – Adams State football dropped its Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference opener on Saturday evening, falling 45-6 to rival Western Colorado in the 78th edition of the Colorado Classic at Rex Field.
The Grizzlies (0-3, 0-1 RMAC) kept themselves within striking distance early, getting on the board with a 40-yard field goal from Quinton Pacheco late in the first quarter to make it 7-3. Pacheco later added a 37-yarder in the third quarter, converting both of his field goal attempts on the night.
The Mountaineers extended their lead before halftime with two more scores, including a 56-yard strike in the closing minute of the second quarter, to go into the break ahead 28-3.
Freshman quarterback Tyson Smith led the Adams State offense, completing 12 of 21 passes for 128 yards. He connected with Geovonni Ribalta for a team-high five catches and 60 yards, while Devin Dawkins hauled in three receptions for 37. Smith also delivered the Grizzlies' biggest play of the night, a 58-yard run in the first quarter that set up the early field goal.
Despite facing pressure, Smith guided a 16-play, 55-yard drive in the third quarter that ended with Pacheco's second field goal. Ahmare Merrida added 15 rushing yards and one catch for seven.
Defensively, the Grizzlies tallied 57 total tackles. Zachary Ray paced the unit with eight stops, while Anthony Henry added six and Roscoe Taylor contributed five. Dominic Childress forced and recovered a fumble to give Adams State a takeaway in the second quarter. Benjamin Rodriguez and Mafileo Tupou each recorded a half sack.
Western Colorado (3-0, 1-0 RMAC) was powered by quarterback Drew Nash, who threw for 263 yards and five touchdowns while also rushing for one score.
The loss moved Western's edge in the Colorado Classic to 45-34 in the all-time series. The annual matchup is the second-longest running rivalry in Colorado college football.
Adams State continues its RMAC slate on the road next weekend, traveling to Pueblo, Colo. to face the No. 12 ranked CSU Pueblo Thunderwolves. Kickoff is scheduled for 2 p.m.
