Williams’ Late Goal Sends Grizzlies to Milestone Win Over Black Hills State

Alamosa, Colo. – A late strike from senior forward Fatso Williams secured a 2-1 victory for the Adams State women's soccer team over Black Hills State on Sunday afternoon at the ASU Soccer & Lacrosse Field.

The Grizzlies (5-2-1, 1-1-0 RMAC) bounced back from an early deficit to earn their first conference win of the season and, in doing so, reached a new milestone. With their fifth win of the year, Adams State has now recorded its highest single-season win total under head coach Alex Greco, who is in his fourth season at the helm.

Black Hills State (4-2-2, 1-1-0 RMAC) opened the scoring in the 11th minute when Peyton Hill connected for the Yellow Jackets. The Grizzlies wasted little time answering back. Less than a minute later, Grace Abbott found the equalizer off a feed from Colette Tena, with Williams also providing an assist to knot the score at 1-1.

The match stayed even through much of the second half as both sides traded possession. Adams State, however, maintained attacking pressure and outshot Black Hills 12-4 on the afternoon. Their persistence finally broke through in the 87th minute, when Williams slotted home the game-winner off a pass from Lauren Ocampo, with Abbott also earning credit on the play.

Goalkeeper Ashlyn Bartley backstopped the victory with one save, while the Grizzly backline held the Yellow Jackets to just two shots on goal.

"That win was truly a team effort. I'm proud of the way our group showed perseverance and continued to fight until the very end. It's a reflection of the growth we've had and the commitment these players bring every day," Greco said.

The win not only pushes Adams State to five victories for the first time in Greco's tenure but also reflects the continued growth of the program, which has shown marked improvement year over year.

The Grizzlies will look to keep their momentum rolling next weekend with a swing along the Front Range, visiting Colorado Christian on Sunday.
