ALAMOSA, Colorado — In a Saturday afternoon game against Colorado Mesa, the Grizzlies struggle falling to the Mavericks 89-49. The home loss puts the Grizzlies at a record of 11-5(5-1 RMAC).
In today's game the Grizzlies were never able to truly get any offense going while the Maverick offense got hot early and never slowed down. Offensively the Grizzlies were only able to make 17 of their 53 shots for a 32.1% field goal percentage, while Colorado Mesa finished the game 30-61 from the floor for a 49.2% field goal percentage. On top of the Grizzlies poor overall shooting they also could not consistently make any 3-pointers or free throws. In the game the Grizzlies finished 3-19 from behind the 3-point line and 12-19 from the free throw line. With these inconsistencies and the hot shooting of Colorado Mesa, the Mavericks were able to pull away leading to a tough loss for the Grizzlies.
In the first half of today's game, the Grizzlies were able to force a good amount of turnovers by the Maverick offense but with the Grizzlies poor shooting the Mavericks were able to take the momentum early giving them the edge that they were able to carry throughout the rest of today's game. In the first half of today's game the Grizzlies forced 8 Maverick turnovers but were only able to score 24 points on 9-28 shooting. On the other hand, the Colorado Mesa offense got hot early despite their early turnovers, scoring 44 points in the first half on 16-30 shooting from the floor.
Unfortunately for the Grizzlies they were not able to make any adjustments in the second half as the Grizzlies only scored 25 points in the second half while Colorado Mesa was able to score 45. With the consistency from the Mavericks they pulled away in the second half leading to the final score of 89-49 in today's game.
Individually for the Grizzlies they were led by Ashiian Hunter, and Taejhuan Hill who were the two Grizzlies tonight who had an efficient night scoring the ball. Hunter finished the game with 4-7 from the floor, scoring 9 points while collecting 2 rebounds and 2 steals during the game. For Hill, she finished 5-10 from the floor, scoring 11 points while collecting 2 rebounds, 2 steals, and 1 assist.
Up next for the Grizzlies will be Chadron State who is currently 0-10 on the season giving them a great opportunity to bounce back and get back to their winning ways. The game against Chadron State will be next Thursday, January 15th, at 5 PM MST. The game will also be held in Chadron, Nebraska as the Grizzlies head on the road next week for two road games before coming back home after the two-game road trip.
