Pueblo, Colo. – Adams State defeated CSU Pueblo, 23-19, in its first RMAC dual of the season. Isaiah Gamez and Aaden Valdez provided the Grizzlies with critical falls to build and maintain the lead.
Adams State took early control of the dual at 125 pounds, where No. 3 Isaiah Gamez recorded a fall in 0:58 over John Spence to secure six points. At 133 pounds, John Provencio opened the scoring with a takedown but ultimately fell to Jacob Meyers by fall in 3:37.
At 141 pounds, Kieran Thompson kept the match close before dropping a 7-4 decision to Eddie Bowman following a late third-period takedown. Angel Flores wrestled a scoreless first period at 149 pounds before scoring an escape to open the second period, but a decisive takedown led to a 3-2 loss.
Hometown wrestler Aaden Valdez jump-started the Grizzlies at 157 pounds, scoring an early takedown and a two-point nearfall in the first period. Valdez added another takedown and a four-point nearfall in the second period before securing a fall at 6:24.
At 165 pounds, Malachi Rider earned a major decision, 16-7, over Deacon Pickett in a back-and-forth bout, taking the lead late in the third period to secure bonus points. Levi Deaguero followed with a 6-2 decision over Solomon Arnds-Volcin at 174 pounds to provide key points for the Grizzlies.
At 184 pounds, Sergio Zaragoza dropped a major decision, 15-6, to Donn Greer. Ben Tonnesson secured the final win for Adams State at 197 pounds with a 14-4 major decision over Mario Tafoya. Tonnesson controlled the match from the outset, allowing Tafoya to score only on escapes. Jaylen Ignacio closed the night with a narrow 4-1 loss to Henry Sturn.
The Grizzlies will host Colorado Mesa on Saturday at 2 p.m. in the Den at Plachy Hall.
