Alamosa, Colo. – Adams State defeated Colorado Mesa 23-16 on the mat to secure its second RMAC dual victory of the season. The Grizzlies jumped out to an early lead with a pin from Isaiah Gamez in the opening bout and never looked back.
At 125 pounds, No. 3-ranked Gamez set the tone with an early takedown and a four-point near fall within the first minute against Adonias Cantu before securing the fall at 2:08 to give Adams State a 6-0 lead.
At 133 pounds, John Provencio opened the scoring with a takedown and kept the match close before falling 9-4 to AJ Hauge.
Kieran Thompson picked up a 10-3 decision at 141 pounds after scoring three takedowns in the first period. Thompson added an escape in the third period to seal the win over Apollo Cruz.
At 149 pounds, Angel Flores earned a 4-1 decision over Alex Castaneda in a tightly contested bout. After a scoreless first period, Flores allowed an escape before responding with his own escape and a decisive takedown in the third period.
No. 3-ranked Aaden Valdez defeated No. 7 Owen Cline 10-3 at 157 pounds. Valdez recorded a takedown in the first period and a four-point near fall in the second, controlling the match until Cline scored his lone takedown in the final period.
At 165 pounds, Malachi Rider posted a major decision with a 23-9 victory over William Alvarado. Rider built a 9-3 lead through the first two periods before breaking the match open with three takedowns in the third.
Levi Deaguero added another major decision at 174 pounds, defeating Christian Pebley 8-0 with two takedowns and an escape.
Competing in his first match as a Grizzly, Caden Schadwinkel dropped a 16-5 major decision to Noah O'Dougherty at 184 pounds.
At 197 pounds, Ben Tonnessen fell 7-2 to No. 7 Gabriel Carranza, scoring his points on escapes.
The final bout ended in a fall, as Jaylen Ignacio was pinned by Ruben Samuelson at 1:59.
Adams State will travel to Nebraska next weekend to compete at the UNK Duals.
