ALAMOSA, Colorado — In a Thursday afternoon game against CSU Pueblo, the Grizzlies take the home win by a score of 75-63. The win is the Grizzlies third straight win and moves them to a record of 14-5(8-1 RMAC). The Grizzlies outstanding start to conference play with a record of 8-1 keeps them in second place behind Colorado Mesa who is currently undefeated in conference play. The Grizzlies will look to continue this strong play as they continue to finish out their conference regular season with 11 more conference games to go.
Taking a closer look at today's game, the Grizzlies were led by their outstanding team defense, along with two outstanding individual performances from Taejhuan Hill and Kiiyani Anitielu. Starting with the Grizzlies strong defense, they were able to hold the CSU Pueblo offense to only 34.8% from the floor, and 18.5% from behind the 3-point. Along with this, the Grizzlies forced 11 turnovers which led to 16 points off of turnovers. The Grizzlies were also able to create continued pressure on the defensive end which led to the Grizzly offense thriving. With the constant pressure the Grizzly offense scored 28 fast break points, along with 44 points in the paint. With this combination, the Grizzlies were able to outscore CSU Pueblo in every single quarter except the third quarter, when both teams scored 19 points. Ultimately, the Grizzlies great play lead to their 12 point win.
Diving into the individual performances of Hill and Anitielu, the two combined for 45 points and 14 rebounds. The two also combined for 17-31 from the floor and 9-12 from the free throw line for very efficient nights for both women. Individually, Hill led the Grizzlies with a career performance, scoring 31 points on 12-16 shooting while also collecting 12 rebounds giving her a double-double on the night. For Anitielu, she scored 14 points while collecting 2 rebounds. Anitielu finished the night 5-15 from the floor, 2-8 from the 3-point line, and 2-2 from the free throw. With the leadership of these two women the rest of the Grizzlies were able to follow suit on way to 75 points and an efficient 45.8% from the floor in tonight's game.
Apart from Hill and Anitielu, Elaina Watson had herself an all-around solid performance scoring 10 points, collecting 8 rebounds, 5 assists and 3 steals. Watson finished second in rebounds behind Hill, while leading the Grizzlies in assists and finishing tied for the team lead in steals with Ashiian Hunter.
The Grizzlies next game will be this Saturday, January 24th against Colorado Christian University. The game will be again held in Plachy Hall, the home of the Grizzlies with the game tipping off at 1 PM MST. Saturday's game will be a great opportunity to continue their hot play as Colorado Christian is currently at the bottom of the conference with a record of 1-8. With strong play Saturday the Grizzlies will have a great opportunity to win their fourth straight game.
