Chadron, Neb. — The No. 16 Adams State Grizzlies traveled to face No. 17 Chadron State and came away with a 22–10 victory over their ranked opponent, despite dropping the final three matches of the dual.
In the opening bout, No. 2 Isaiah Gamez defeated No. 4 Quade Smith by a 7–1 decision. The match started slowly, with no scoring until the final seconds of the first period, when Gamez secured a three-point takedown. Smith scored his lone point with an escape early in the second period before Gamez responded with an escape of his own to open the third. In a back-and-forth battle, Gamez maintained control and added another takedown late to seal the win.
At 133 pounds, Jakob Romero earned a 5–2 decision over Hunter Jacobsen of Chadron State. Wrestling in his first dual of the season for the Grizzlies, Romero took control early with a takedown and followed with escapes in the second and third periods, along with a riding-time point, to secure the victory.
Kieran Thompson picked up a 3–2 tiebreak decision over No. 14 Caleb Chavez at 141 pounds in a triple-overtime match. Chavez scored a two-point reversal in the second period before Thompson answered with a one-point escape. Thompson added another escape in the third to force overtime. With no points scored in the extra periods, the match moved to tiebreakers, where Thompson earned an escape in the first tiebreak and prevented Chavez from escaping in the second to earn three team points.
At 149 pounds, Angel Flores recorded a 14–4 major decision over Aidan Callahan. Flores set the tone early with a takedown in the first period and never looked back, adding three more takedowns throughout the match. Callahan's only scoring came via four escapes.
No. 3 Aaden Valdez earned a 5–0 decision over Brandon Paredes at 157 pounds. Valdez scored a takedown and added an escape and a riding-time point across the second and third periods.
Malachi Rider claimed a 4–1 sudden-victory win over Tayten Gillette at 165 pounds. After both wrestlers scored just an escape through regulation, Rider secured a takedown in overtime to clinch the victory.
At 174 pounds, Levi Deaguero notched a 6–5 decision, using more than three minutes of riding time to earn the deciding point.
The Grizzlies will host Western Colorado on Friday evening at 6 p.m. in Plachy Hall.
