Grizzlies Fall 3-1 to Western Colorado in Thursday Afternoon Match

ALAMOSA, Colorado — The Adams State University women's soccer team dropped its RMAC home match Wednesday afternoon, falling 3-1 to Western Colorado University at the ASU Soccer Field. With the loss, the Grizzlies move to 5-4-1(1-3-0 RMAC).

In today's match, Adams State came out strong in the opening half, controlling possession and creating several offensive opportunities. The Grizzlies recorded five shots in the opening 45 minutes, finding the back of the net in the 28th minute to open up the scoring and giving the Grizzlies an early 1-0 lead. Sophomore Mia Del Muro opened the scoring for Adams State with Sophia Miera providing the assist on the goal, setting up Del Muro for her first goal of the match.

Adams State carried its 1-0 lead into halftime, with goalkeeper Mari Jimenez making two saves during the opening half to keep Western Colorado off the scoreboard.

Unfortunately, after halftime, the Mountaineers responded quickly, scoring three unanswered goals to take control of the match. Western Colorado opened its scoring in the 66th minute, tying the game at 1-1. The Mountaineers continued their offensive attack, adding two more goals in the final 15 minutes to take a 3-1 advantage. 

Despite trailing in the second half and coming up goalless, Adams State continued to create offensive opportunities. The Grizzlies recorded 12 shots after halftime and finished the match with 17 total shots, including 10 shots on goal.

Del Muro and Denali Levin led the Grizzlies offensively, each recording three shots on goal, with Del Muro scoring Adams State's lone goal. Levin finished with a team-high five total shots, while Lorena Vargas-Galvan added three shots, including one on target. Aja Lister and Lauren Ocampo were both accurate with their opportunities, as Lister placed both of her shots on target and Ocampo recorded a shot on goal on her lone attempt.

Jimenez played all 90 minutes in goal for the Grizzlies, recording six saves on nine shots on goal from Western Colorado.

Overall, Adams State held an advantage in corner kicks, earning five compared to four for the Mountaineers. The Grizzlies finished the match with 17 shots to Western Colorado's 19, while securing one more shot on goal finishing with 10 to Western Colorado's nine.

Up next for the Grizzlies is another home match this Sunday, October 4, against Fort Lewis College. Sunday's match will kick off at 1:30 p.m. MST and provide the Grizzlies with an opportunity to bounce back after tonight's tough home loss.
