LOS LUNAS, New Mexico — In the final game of a five game road trip the Grizzlies softball team falls to West Team A&M by a final score of 17-0. The loss drops the Grizzlies to 0-5 as they struggled in their first weekend of the season.
In today's game the Grizzlies struggled both offensively and on the mound as they could not get any runs on the board or stop a host West Texas A&M offense. In the game the Grizzlies were only able to collect 4 hits whereas West Texas collected 13 hits while also 7 walks for 20 total baserunners. The 20 baserunners by West Texas led to 17 runs in the 5-inning ball game.
Diving into the individual stats for the Grizzlies, on the mound today was Jaklynn Harteker who started the game finishing with a final line of 1 inning, 4 hits allowed, 6 runs, and 1 strikeout. Following Harteker was Payton Torres who threw 2 ⅔ innings, allowing 8 hits, and 10 runs. Collecting the final out for the Grizzlies was Ryann Fredrick who finished with ⅓ of an inning, while allowing 1 hit and 1 run in the game.
Offensively for the Grizzlies they finished the game with 4 hits and 1 walk for 5 total baserunners. Collecting hits in today's game were Jayde Garcia, Isabel Rodriguez, Alexis Gonzales, and Raegan Johnson. All four women collected 1 hit each for the 4 hits the Grizzlies were able to collect on the challenging pitching staff of West Texas. For Rodriguez, her one hit on the game was a double which was her second double of the year as she starts the season on a solid roll.
For the Grizzlies, they will look to learn and grow from their first weekend of the season as they gear up for the UCCS Tournament next weekend when they will play another 5 games against 3 different teams at two different locations. The Grizzlies first three games will be played in Pueblo, Colorado with their first two games being next Friday, February 6th. Their first game will be against Texas A&M University - Kingsville at 12:30 PM MST, and their second game will be against Pittsburg State University at 5:30 PM MST. Following Friday's game they will play another two games on Saturday the 7th, and a fifth and final game on the 8th to wrap up the UCSS Tournament.
