PLAINVIEW, Texas — In a Saturday doubleheader, the Grizzlies drop both games to Wayland Baptist. In game one the Grizzlies fell 14-12, and in game two they fell 13-2. The two losses drop the Grizzlies to a record of 1-9 after the first 10 games of the season.
Game 1
In game one the Grizzlies jumped out to a quick lead, scoring 5 runs in the first two innings to take a 5-0 lead. Wayland Baptist responded in the third with a solo home run in the third and an RBI single in the fourth to make the game 5-2. The Grizzlies added in the fifth inning to extend their lead to 7-2 but unfortunately the Grizzlies struggled massively in the bottom half of the fifth inning allowing Wayland Baptist to score 8 runs to give them a 10-7 lead. After the fifth inning both the Grizzlies and Wayland Baptist scored in the sixth inning with the Grizzlies scoring 2, and Wayland scoring 4 giving them a 14-9 going into the final inning of the 7-inning ball game. The Grizzlies fought hard in the top of the seventh but fell just short scoring 3 runs making the final score 14-12.
Diving into the Grizzlies individual statistics, the Grizzlies starting pitcher was Joseph Marek who went 4 innings today, allowing 4 hits, 6 runs, walking 4 batters, and striking out 2. Following Marek was Justin Arellano who collected the loss today moving his record to 0-1 on the season. Arellano's final line today was 2 innings, 5 hits, 8 runs(4 earned), and 3 walks. Overall, the Grizzlies surrendered 9 hits, 14 runs(10 earned), walked 7, and collected 2 strikeouts in the 14-12 loss.
On the offensive side, the Grizzlies swung it extremely well. On the day, they collected 12 hits, 6 walks, 1 hit by pitch, and 9 RBIs. Leading the way for the Grizzlies was Isaiah Pruitt, Ayden tauscher, Josh Parks, and Gunner Martinez. All four individuals collected multiple hits and scored at least once. Between the four, they combined for 9 hits, 7 RBIs, and 7 runs scored. Individually, Pruitt finished the day 2 for 4 with 1 run scored and 2 RBIs; Tauscher finished 2 for 5 with 2 runs scored and 1 RBi; Parks went 3 for 5 with 2 runs scored, a home run, and 4 RBIs; and Martinez finished the day 2 for 3 with 2 runs scored. Outside of these four individuals Christian Altamirano and Macs Carrillo both scored twice, and Kade Poteet-Herrera scored once giving the Grizzlies their 12 runs in game one.
Game 2
In game two, the Grizzlies could not bounce back after a tough game one loss losing 13-2 in a shortened 7-inning ball game. Wayland Baptist was able to jump on the Grizzlies early, scoring 9 in the first three innings to take a quick 9-1 lead. The Grizzlies were able to score in the top of the fourth to respond, but unfortunately that was the last time the Grizzlies were able to score against the Wayland Baptist pitching staff. Wayland on the other hand was able to score 4 more runs in the bottom of the sixth to extend their lead to 13-2 to put the final touch on today's tough game.
Individually for the Grizzlies, Julian Garza started on the mound collecting the loss today moving his record to 0-3. Garza's final line today was 2 ⅔ innings, 11 hits, 9 runs, and 1 strikeout. Following Garza was Osaias Hinojosa who finished with a final line of 3 innings, 3 hits, 4 runs, 4 walks, and 3 strikeouts. Collecting the final out today was Daniel Hoodak, who came in during the sixth inning to finish the sixth with a pick-off at first base.
Offensively, the Grizzlies collected 5 hits, 4 walks, and 2 hit by pitchers for 11 base runners. Unfortunately for the Grizzlies they struggled to get the big hit leaving 10 base runners on in the game. Adams State had multiple opportunities to score and add to their 2 runs throughout the game but the Wayland Baptist pitching staff was able to get key outs to keep the Grizzly offense down. Individually on the offense side, the Grizzlies were led by Gunner Martinez, Isaiah Pruitt, and Macs Carrillo. For Martinez, he had a great game finishing 2 for 2 with a hit by pitch to reach base all three times. Martinez also scored one of the Grizzlies two runs on the game. For Pruitt, he finished 1 for 3 with an RBI and a walk, while Carrillo finished the day 1 for 3. Scoring the other run for the Grizzlies wa Seth Reker who finished the day 1 for 4 with the lone run scored.
Looking forward for the Grizzlies, they will play another doubleheader tomorrow against Wayland Baptist to finish their four game series. The game schedule will mirror today's schedule with the first game kicking off at 11 AM MST, and the second game following 30 minutes after the completion of game one. The Grizzlies will look to bounce back tomorrow and secure a series split by taking both games tomorrow.
