Adams State Baseball Drops Final Two Games to Wayland Baptist

PLAINVIEW, Texas — Adams State gets walked-off in both games in the Sunday doubleheader against Wayland Baptist. In game one the Grizzlies fell 9-8, and in game two they fell to Wayland 6-5. The two losses now puts the Grizzlies at a record of 1-11.

Game 1

In game one, the Grizzlies started off hot offensively yet again scoring 6 runs in the first 4 innings. Adams State had two three run innings in the third and fourth inning to take a 6-2 lead going into the fifth inning. The Grizzlies scored their runs on walks by Ayden Tauscher and Josh Parks, a double play by Ryan Vandever, a two-run single by Tauscher, and a passed ball. For Wayland Baptist they scored their runs on a solo home run in the second inning and an RBI single in the third. After the fourth inning Wayland Baptist was able to get offense going against the Grizzly starter Jacob Janata. They were able to score on a single in the fifth then the big hit was a 3-run home run in the sixth inning that ended up tying the game. After the sixth inning, nobody was able to score until the ninth inning when the Grizzlies scored 2 and Wayland Baptist scored 3 to walk off the Grizzlies. Game one was a tough loss for the Grizzlies after they were able to take the lead in the ninth. Two, two out walks allowed Wayland Baptist to have life late, giving them the opportunity to take game one out from under the Grizzlies' noses.

On the mound for the Grizzlies today was Janata who pitched a better game than his final line showed. Janata finished the game going 5 ⅓ innings, giving up 5 hits, 6 runs(5 earned), 3 walks, and collecting 1 strikeout. Following Janata was Paul Ruiz who threw an outstanding 3 ⅓ innings hitless. Unfortunately for Ruiz the 2 walks he surrendered led to 2 runs in the ninth. Ruiz finished with a final line of 3 ⅓ innings, 0 hits, 2 runs, 2 walks, and 3 strikeouts. Attempting to close the game today was Justin Arellano who collected today's loss giving up 2 hits to allow Wayland Baptist to walk it off in the bottom of the ninth. The loss puts Arellano at a record of 0-2 early on the season.

Offensively, the Grizzlies were led by the top four in their lineup, along with their 9 batter. This included Christian Altamirano, Isaiah Pruitt, Ayden Tauscher, Josh Parks, and Macs Carrillo. The five individuals accounted for 9 of the Grizzlies hits and all 8 of their runs. As well, Tauscher and Parks accounted for all 5 RBIs the Grizzlies collected during the game. Individually, Altamirano finished the day 3 for 4, walking once, and scoring 3 runs. Pruitt finished the day 1 for 3 with 2 hit by pitches and 2 runs scored; Tauscher finished 2 for 3 with 3 RBIs, 2 walks, and 1 run scored; Parks went 1 for 4 with 2 RBIs and a walk; and Carrillo finished the day 2 for 3 with a hit by pitch and 2 runs scored. Overall the five seniors had an outstanding day and led the Grizzlies to a solid offensive day.

Game 2

In game two today, the Grizzlies took advantage of Wayland Baptists defensive mistakes to score 5 runs on just 6 hits. Of the Grizzlies 5 runs, only 3 of them were earned which gave them the lead early, when they were able to jump out to a 5-3 lead after the fifth inning. Unfortunately, the Grizzlies lost another late lead in the final two innings of the ball game giving Wayland Baptist another opportunity to walk-off the Grizzlies which they were successful in doing with a walk-off bomb in the bottom of the seventh inning.

Pitching for the Grizzlies today was Austin Delgado who threw a good 4 innings, bouncing back extremely well after Wayland Baptist was able to jump out to a quick 3-1 lead after the first inning. After Delgado finished the first he went 3 zeros to keep the Wayland offense to only 3 runs during his time on the mound. Delgado finished with a final line of 4 innings, 6 hits allowed, 3 runs, and 1 walk. Following Delgado was Dylan Schaefer who threw 1 ⅔ innings, allowing 2 hits, 2 runs, walking 2, and striking out 1. Finishing the game and collecting today's loss was Daniel Hoodak who threw 1 /3 of an inning, allowed 1 hit, 1 run, and collected 1 strikeout. Overall, the Grizzlies surrendered 9 hits, walked 3, struck out 2, and allowed 6 Wayland Baptist runs.

On the offensive side, the Grizzlies were able to get 11 base runners through 6 hits and 5 walks. Unfortunately, the Grizzlies were only able to score 5 runs, leaving 7 runners on base in today's game. Leading the way offensively today was again the top of the order with Altamirano, Pruitt, and Tauscher accounting for 4 of the Grizzlies 6 hits with Altamirano and Pruitt collecting 1 hit, and Tauscher collecting 2 hits. The two other Grizzlies to collect hits today were Seth Reker who finished 1 for 3 on the day, and Austin Yi who also finished 1 for 3, while collecting an RBI. Scoring for the Grizzlies was Altamirano, Pruitt, Tauscher, Reker, and Osaias Hinojosa
