DENVER, Colorado — In a Saturday afternoon game against Regis, the Grizzlies fell by a final score of 17-9. The loss for the Grizzlies drops them to 1-12 on the season, as they continue to have struggles with consistency early on. The Grizzlies will look to bounce back tomorrow in their final two games of their three-game series against Regis.
Diving into today's game deeper, the story for the Grizzlies was the free passes they committed both on the mound and defensively in the field. In the game, the Grizzlies committed 4 errors, walked 4, and hit 2 batters for a total of 10 free base runners. With the free passes Regis was able to score 8 unearned runs, as well as having constant traffic on the bases giving them constant opportunities to score runs leading to their 17 runs. On top of the Grizzlies struggles on the mound and defensively, offensively they left 9 base runners on base. With the combination of inconsistent offense, defensive struggles, and inconsistent pitching Regis was able to pull away with today's win, beating the Grizzlies by a final score of 17-9.
Taking a look at the individual statistics in today's game, the Grizzlies started sophomore Joseph Marek on the mound. He finished the day throwing 3 innings, allowing 9 hits, 10 runs(7 earned), while walking 2, hitting 2 batters, and striking out 6. Marek collected the loss in today's game as Regis was able to jump out to an early lead which they held throughout today's game. For Marek, he had great strikeout stuff today, but 2 errors behind him and some weak contact that fell for base hits made his final line look worse than he pitched. Following Marek was Austin Delgado who finished throwing 2 ⅔ innings, allowing 7 hits and 5 runs(2 earned). Delgado was also the recipient of bad luck as 2 errors behind him forced him to throw more pitches and face more batters than he should have. Throwing the final 2 ⅓ was a combination of Ethan Bertke and Cain Gostenik. Bertke threw 2 /3 of an inning, allowing 1 hit, walking 2, and allowing 2 unearned runs. For Gostenik, he had his best appearance of the year going 1 ⅔ innings scoreless, allowing 1 hit, and collecting 1 strikeout. For Gostenik it was an appearance he can build upon moving forward.
Offensively, the Grizzlies had multiple standout performances as Isaiah Pruitt, Ayden Tauscher, Josh Parks, Ryan Vandever, Gunner Martinez, and Macs Carrillo all collected multiple hits. Vandever led the way for the Grizzlies finishing the game 3 for 4 with an RBI and a double in the game. Following Vandever was Tauscher who finished the day 2 for 5 with 2 RBIs. For Pruitt, Martinez, and Carrillo they all made their impact by getting on base and scoring. Between the three individuals they all scored 2 times for 6 of the Grizzlies 9 runs. Offensively, the Grizzlies had a very solid day collecting 15 hits and 21 base runners. Their one downfall was their inability to get the big hit that would have allowed them to score even more runs. For the Grizzlies, if they are able to keep this offensive attack going while playing good defense and pitching it well they will have an outstanding chance tomorrow to respond against Regis and collect a couple wins before they head home for their first home series of the year next weekend.
The Grizzlies games tomorrow will begin at 11 AM MST, with game two following 30 minutes after the conclusion of game one. The Grizzlies will again play Regis, here in Denver, Colorado at the home of the Rangers. The Grizzlies will look to respond tomorrow as they will have a great opportunity to win some ball games if they can keep up their offensive attack while playing clean baseball. Tune into tomorrow's games as both games will be streamed on the RMAC network.
