Alamosa, Colo. – Adams State Softball went 2-0 during the first day of the series, claiming game one 5-3 and game two 8-7.
The Grizzlies jumped out to an early lead with a three-run first inning and added two more runs in the sixth to secure the win.
Adams State (6-18) wasted no time getting on the board. After Makenzie Simon reached on an error and Isabel Rodriguez singled, Caylie Eiguren drove both runners in with a triple to right field. Ali Davis followed with an RBI single to score Eiguren and give the Grizzlies a 3-0 advantage in the opening frame.
Colorado State Pueblo (13-11) threatened throughout the game but Adams State pitcher Aryana Muñoz kept the ThunderWolves in check. Muñoz tossed a complete game, allowing three runs (two earned) on nine hits while striking out four to earn her second win of the season.
The ThunderWolves cut the lead to one in the fifth inning after a pair of doubles and an Adams State error brought two runs across the plate.
Adams State responded in the sixth inning. Davis led off with a single before Emily Sauvageau delivered an RBI triple to extend the lead to 4-2. Kaylee Eyl followed with an RBI single up the middle to give the Grizzlies a 5-2 cushion.
CSU Pueblo plated one run in the seventh on an RBI double from Taylor Brower, but Muñoz closed the door to seal the victory.
Davis led Adams State at the plate with two hits and an RBI, while Eiguren drove in two runs with her first-inning triple. Sauvageau also recorded a triple and RBI in the win.
During game two the Grizzlies used a seven-run second inning to build a large early lead and held on late to earn the split and improve to 6-18 on the season.
Colorado State Pueblo struck first with a run in the top of the opening inning, but Adams State answered immediately in the bottom half. Isabel Rodriguez singled and later scored on an RBI single from Caylie Eiguren to tie the game at 1-1.
Adams State broke the game open in the second inning, sending 12 batters to the plate and scoring seven runs. The rally was highlighted by a three-RBI double from Rodriguez down the left field line. The Grizzlies also drew several walks during the inning and capitalized on a pair of passed balls to take an 8-1 lead.
CSU Pueblo responded in the fifth inning, scoring four runs to cut the deficit to 8-5 before adding two more runs in the sixth to make it a one-run game.
The ThunderWolves had the tying run on base in the sixth, but Adams State turned to Aryana Muñoz in relief. Muñoz worked the final 1.1 innings without allowing a run to earn her second save of the season.
Celie Page earned the win in the circle after pitching four innings, allowing four runs on six hits with one strikeout.
Rodriguez led the Grizzlies offensively, going 2-for-3 with three RBIs and two runs scored. Eiguren added an RBI while Kaylee Eyl recorded a triple in the win.
Despite being out-hit 9-5, Adams State capitalized on eight walks and timely hitting to secure the victory.
The Grizzlies will return tomorrow for the final two games of the series starting at 11 a.m.
