Grizzlies Drop Series to Fort Lewis

Durango, Colo. — Adams State showed flashes on both sides of Sunday's RMAC doubleheader but ultimately came up short, falling 3-2 in Game 1 and 12-4 in Game 2 to Fort Lewis at Aspen Field.

The Grizzlies struck first in the opener, manufacturing two runs in the second inning. After working a pair of walks, Ali Davis drove in the first run on a single that was misplayed in the outfield, and Denae Ojeda followed with an RBI single up the middle to give Adams State a 2-0 lead.

Fort Lewis responded immediately in the bottom half and took a 3-2 advantage that held the rest of the way.

From there, pitching took over. Aryana Munoz provided a strong relief effort for Adams State, tossing four innings and allowing just one hit to keep the deficit at one.

Despite drawing five walks and taking advantage of three Fort Lewis errors, the Grizzlies were unable to break through, finishing with just two hits. Ojeda and Davis accounted for both RBIs.

In Game 2, Fort Lewis jumped out early, scoring twice in the first inning and building a 5-0 lead through three innings behind a mix of extra-base hits and an Adams State error.

The Grizzlies answered in the fourth with their biggest offensive inning of the day. Back-to-back singles from Aubree Davis and Makenzie Simon sparked the rally before Kaylee Eyl drove in a run. Ojeda then delivered a three-run double to right field to cut the deficit to 5-4.

However, the momentum shifted in the bottom of the fourth when the Skyhawks hit a grand slam to extend the lead to 9-4. With additional runs in the fifth and sixth innings, the Grizzlies were unable to recover and fell 12-4.

Adams State will return home next weekend to face UC-Colorado Springs in a Thursday-Friday RMAC series at the ASU Softball Complex.
