Grizzlies Fall in Doubleheader to UCCS

Alamosa, Colo. – Adams State battled throughout Thursday's doubleheader but came up short in both contests, falling 16-8 in Game 1 and 8-4 in Game 2 against UCCS.

In the opener, UCCS used a fast start to take control, plating five runs in the first inning and adding another in the second. Adams State responded in the second inning with a solo home run from Caylie Eiguren to get on the board.

Trailing 9-1 heading into the fourth, the Grizzlies mounted their strongest push of the day. Ali Davis and Kaylee Eyl each drove in runs before Denae Ojeda launched a two-run home run to center, cutting the deficit to 9-5. Adams State continued to chip away, adding two runs in the fifth and another in the sixth to make it 11-8.

However, the Mountain Lions pulled away late with a five-run seventh inning to secure the 16-8 win. Ojeda led the offense with a home run and two RBIs, while Eiguren also homered. Davis and Eyl each recorded multi-hit performances as Adams State finished with eight hits.

In Game 2, UCCS once again struck early, scoring three runs in the first inning and adding three more in the third to build a 6-2 lead.

The Grizzlies answered in the opening innings, including an RBI single from Eiguren and another run in the second. Adams State pulled within two in the fourth inning, capitalizing on UCCS errors. Eyl brought in a run with a sacrifice fly before Isabel Rodriguez delivered an RBI triple to make it 6-4.

Despite the momentum, Adams State was held scoreless over the final three innings. UCCS added two insurance runs in the seventh to seal the 8-4 victory.

Eyl led the Grizzlies in Game 2 with a 2-for-3 performance, while Rodriguez recorded a triple and an RBI. Raegan Johnson also added two hits as Adams State totaled nine hits in the nightcap.

The Grizzlies will be back tomorrow for Game 3 and 4 of the series beginning at 11 a.m. tomorrow.
