Denver — Adams State jumped out to an early lead in the nightcap but could not hold on as MSU Denver completed a doubleheader sweep Saturday afternoon.
The Grizzlies dropped the opener 8-0 in six innings before falling 8-6 in the second game despite scoring four runs in the first inning.
In Game 1, Adams State was limited to three hits as MSU Denver took control early and never looked back. The Roadrunners scored once in the first inning before breaking the game open with three runs in the second. Natalie Shellhorn delivered the key blow with a three-run home run to extend the lead to 4-0.
MSU Denver added two runs in both the fifth and sixth innings to secure the run-rule victory.
Emily Sauvageau led Adams State at the plate with two hits, while Raegan Johnson added a single. Celie Page took the loss after allowing six runs over five innings, while Aubree Davis allowed two runs in relief.
The Grizzlies responded offensively in Game 2, striking for four runs in the opening inning.
Jayde Garcia drew a walk before Emily Sauvageau doubled home the first run of the game. Isabel Rodriguez followed with a two-run triple, and Caylie Eiguren lifted a sacrifice fly to give Adams State a quick 4-0 lead.
MSU Denver answered immediately. Brooklyn Enny launched a three-run home run in the bottom of the first, and the Roadrunners continued to chip away before taking the lead for good with three runs in the fourth inning. Enny finished the game with two home runs and four RBIs to lead MSU Denver.
Adams State closed the gap in the fifth inning when Alexis Gonzales singled and Makenzie Simon drove in two runs with a double down the left-field line to cut the deficit to 8-6.
The Grizzlies finished with nine hits in the second game. Eiguren recorded two hits, while Rodriguez, Sauvageau and Simon each drove in runs.
Despite the late push, Adams State could not complete the comeback and fell by the two-run margin.
Adams State returns to action Sunday at 11 a.m. to close the series against MSU Denver.
