Grizzlies Bounce Back Securing Series Split Against Colorado School of Mines

GOLDEN, Colorado — In the Grizzlies second and final doubleheader against Colorado School of Mines, Adams State sweeps the day securing a series split in their first conference weekend of the season. The Grizzlies won today's first game 26-12, and secured the series split with a 9-7 victory in game two. The two wins moved the Grizzlies to a record of 7-15(2-2 RMAC).

Game 1

In game one the Grizzlies offense led the way scoring 26 runs while collecting 35 baserunners with 16 hits, 18 walks, and a hit batter. With this insane offensive output the Grizzlies took control of game one early and never gave Colorado School of Mines an opportunity to come back.

Leading the way for the Grizzlies offensively was a multitude of individuals with Christian Altamirano, Osaias Hinojosa, Macs Carrillo, Kade Poteet-Herrera, and Gunner Martinez making the biggest impact. On the day, these five individuals collected 20 RBIs, 11 hits, and 13 runs. Individually, Altamirano finished the day 3 for 6, scoring 2 runs, and collecting 3 RBIs; Hinojosa finished 3 for 4 while walking twice, scoring 3 runs, collecting 5 RBIs, and hitting a home run; Carrillo finished 2 for 4 with 2 walks, 2 runs scored, and 2 RBIs; Poteet-Herrera finished 1 for 1 with 2 walks, 3 runs scored, 5 RBIs, and his first home run of the season; and Martinez finished 2 for 2 with 1 walk, 3 runs scored, 5 RBIs, and his second home run of the season. Overall, it was truly a special day for the Grizzly offense as they broke out for their biggest game of the season.

On the mound for the Grizzlies starting the game was Austin Delgado who collected his first win of the season. Delgado finished throwing 4 innings, allowing 4 hits, 4 runs(3 earned), while collecting 2 strikeouts. Delgado had a very efficient day throwing well through his 4 innings before he had to leave the game early. By collecting the win in game one, Delgado moves to a record of 1-1 on the young season. Following Delgado was CJ Pino, Connor Kerns, Dylan Schaefer, and Justin Arellano. Between these 4 individuals the Grizzlies were able to collect the final 9 outs of the game as today's 9-inning ball game became a 7-inning game with Grizzlies surpassing the 12-run RMAC rule.

Game 2

In game two, the Grizzly offensive production did not slow down as the Grizzlies collected another 14 hits and 9 runs. Leading the way for the Grizzlies though was starting pitcher Joseph Marek who was able to keep the Colorado School of Mines offense quiet until the Grizzlies offense started scoring runs late.

Early in today's game neither team was able to truly consistently score as the game was 2-1 going into the top of the 5th inning. Through the first 4 innings of the ball game Marek only allowed 3 hits which gave the Grizzlies life going into the 5th inning to get their hot offense rolling yet again. In the 5th and 6th innings the Grizzlies were able to score 8 runs giving them a 9-3 lead going into the bottom of the 6th inning. Colorado School of Mines did respond well in the bottom of the 6th making the score 9-7, but Grizzly closer Daniel Hoodak came in with 2 outs in the 6th inning to shut the door and hold Colorado School of Mines from making the comeback. For the Grizzly closer, he collected his first save of the season by going 1 ⅓ scoreless innings to secure the win for Adams State.

Individually the Grizzlies were led by starting pitcher Marek and closer Hoodak on the mound as the two finished the game only surrendering 4 hits over the course of 6 ⅓ innings. With this lack of production from the Orediggers lineup, the hot hitting of the Grizzlies took over late securing the win. For Marek, he collected the win today moving his season record to 2-2.

On the offensive side, the Grizzlies were again led by Freshman Osaias Hinojosa who finished the game 3 for 4 with a double, a home run, 5 RBIs, and a run scored. For Hinojosa on the weekend he finished with 5 home runs and 18 RBIs for a career weekend. Following the lead of Hinojosa was Macs Carrillo, Ayden Tauscher, Isaiah Pruitt, and Colton Johnson. For Carrillo, he finished the day 2 for 5 scoring twice, while Tauscher finished 2 for 4 with a walk, an RBI, and a run scored. For Pruitt and Johnson, they both finished the day 2 for 4 with a double and run scored. For Johnson, his two hits today were his first two hits of his college career as the true freshman had an outstanding day for the Adams State offense.

Overall, today was an outstanding day for the Grizzlies as they were able to bounce back after a rough day one to secure the series split as they move forward in conference play. The Grizzlies next games will be played this upcoming weekend as they will have their first home conference series against Colorado Christian University. The Grizzlies first game against CCU will be this Friday, March 13th at 3 PM MST. Adams State will then continue their series with a doubleheader on Saturday and the final game of the four-game series on Sunday. For the Grizzlies, they will look to continue their hot play as they will look to continue winning conference games early to give them a strong start to the conference season. Come out and support the Grizzlies this weekend as they look to stay hot and play outstanding baseball in front of their home fans.
