LAS VEGAS, N.M. — Adams State Softball opened Thursday's RMAC doubleheader with a composed, efficient performance on both sides of the ball, taking Game One 3–2 behind eight hits and a complete‐game effort in the circle. New Mexico Highlands countered with a heavy offensive surge in Game Two, using three multi‐run innings to hand the Grizzlies a 14–9 loss and split the afternoon at the NMHU Softball Field.
Game One: Adams State 3, New Mexico Highlands 2
Adams State broke through in the third inning, turning back‐to‐back quality at‐bats into a 2–0 lead.
Denae Ojeda scored the game's first run on an RBI single from
Caylie Eiguren, and
Jayde Garcia came home moments later on a sacrifice fly from
Isabel Rodriguez. Highlands cut the lead in half with an RBI single in the bottom of the third, but the Grizzlies answered immediately. In the fourth,
Devree Godinez reached and Ojeda delivered again, ripping an RBI double to right field to extend the advantage to 3–1.
The Cowgirls added one more run in the fifth, but Aryana Muñoz shut the door from there, tossing a complete game with four strikeouts and allowing just two earned runs on eight hits. Ojeda led the offense with two hits, while Eiguren, Rodriguez, Garcia, and
Emily Sauvageau each added a hit in the balanced 8‐hit performance.
The win marked Adams State's eighth of the season and set the tone for a high‐scoring second game.
Game Two: New Mexico Highlands 14, Adams State 9
Game Two turned into an offensive showcase, with both teams combining for 23 runs and 31 hits. Highlands opened with a three‐run first inning, but Adams State responded immediately with a five‐run explosion in the second.
Denae Ojeda singled home a run, Rodriguez added a sacrifice fly,
Raegan Johnson drove in another with an infield single, and Sauvageau capped the rally with a two‐RBI ground‐rule double to left, giving the Grizzlies a 7–3 lead.
The Cowgirls flipped the momentum in the fourth, stringing together six runs on five hits to reclaim a 9–7 advantage. Adams State answered in the fifth when
Brylyn Haddick doubled down the left‐field line to score
Jayde Garcia, trimming the deficit to 9–8. Highlands, however, continued to apply pressure, adding two runs in the fifth and three more in the sixth to stretch the lead to 14–9. Adams State put runners on in the final innings but could not close the gap.
The Grizzlies tallied 14 hits in the loss, led by three‐hit performances from Ojeda, Eiguren, and
Jayde Garcia. Johnson scored twice, Sauvageau drove in two, and Rodriguez added an RBI and a hit off the bench.
They will look to take the series with a final day two doubleheader beginning at 10 a.m., due to weather.
