ALPINE, Texas — On Saturday morning, the Grizzlies Women's Soccer team took on Sul Ross State for their second game of the season. The Grizzlies took the game in a hard fought battle by a final score of 1-0 to move to 2-0 on the young season.
The Grizzlies controlled much of the match offensively, finishing with a 21-10 advantage in shots and putting 12 attempts on frame. Adams State also held a 4-1 edge in corner kicks while limiting Sul Ross State to just three shots on goal.
After a scoreless opening half, Adams State broke through in the second half to take a 1-0 lead. Starting Forward Ashlyn De Lemos scored the goal for the Grizzlies as she finished the day with 5 shots with 4 being on goal. Assisting on the goal was Mia Del Muro. After De Lemos's goal, the Grizzlies maintained their advantage the rest of the way, keeping Sul Ross State off the scoreboard to preserve the victory.
Adams State's defensive effort was led by goalkeeper Clarissa Ramirez, who played 77 minutes and recorded two saves while helping the Grizzlies pitch a shutout. Kena Keyes finished the match in goal and added another save as the Grizzlies combined for three saves and their first shutout of the contest.
Elsewhere for the Grizzlies, Denali Levin, Mia Del Muro, and Lorena Vargas-Galvan all added 2 shots on goal to add to the Grizzlies team total of 12. As well, Keira Robertson and Annabell Haugen each added a shot on goal themselves giving the Grizzlies a dominating offensive performance despite only scoring 1 goal.
The Grizzlies continued to apply pressure throughout the second half, recording 12 shots after halftime compared to seven in the opening 45 minutes. Adams State also generated three of its four corner kicks in the second half.
With the victory, Adams State moves forward with momentum as it continues its early-season schedule. The Grizzlies' combination of offensive pressure, defensive organization and strong goalkeeping proved to be the difference in the 1-0 result.
Looking forward to the Grizzlies next game, they will take on Oklahoma Panhandle State University next Tuesday, September 1st. The game will be hosted by Oklahoma Panhandle State with the game being played in Goodwell, Oklahoma, starting at 1 PM MST. The Grizzlies will look to continue their early season momentum as they will seek to start the season with a perfect 3-0 start.
