CANYON, Texas — Adams State volleyball closed Saturday on a high note, bouncing back from a five-set loss to West Texas A&M with a 3-0 sweep of Tuskegee at the WTAMU Fieldhouse.
Game 1: Grizzlies 2, West Texas A&M 3
The Grizzlies battled West Texas A&M through five sets in their first match of the day, falling 25-17, 27-29, 18-25, 25-21, 15-3. Adams State then turned around and controlled its second match, defeating Tuskegee 25-13, 25-13, 25-16.
Isa Folau paced the Adams State attack throughout the day. Against West Texas A&M, Folau recorded a match-high 21 kills while hitting .304 and added three digs and two block assists. Lizzie Macintosh followed with 15 kills, three service aces and three block assists. Isabella DeLaRosa directed the offense with 55 assists.
After dropping the opening set against West Texas A&M, Adams State answered in a marathon second set. The teams were tied at 24, 25, 26 and 27 before the Grizzlies scored the final two points to take the frame, 29-27.
The Grizzlies carried that momentum into the third set, taking a 25-18 victory and moving ahead 2-1 in the match. West Texas A&M responded in the fourth, using an early advantage before holding off an Adams State push for a 25-21 win to force the deciding set.
West Texas A&M controlled the fifth set to secure the 3-2 victory. Despite the loss, Adams State finished the match with 62 kills, 61 assists and five service aces while hitting .217.
Game 2: Grizzlies 3, Tuskegee 0
The Grizzlies hit .452 as a team, putting down 42 kills with only nine attacking errors across three sets. They also recorded nine service aces and five total blocks while holding Tuskegee to a .125 hitting percentage.
Aubrey Rothermich led the attack with 12 kills on 16 attempts and just one error for a .688 hitting percentage. Folau added 11 kills on 16 swings with one error, hitting .625, while contributing five digs and three block assists.
DeLaRosa finished with 34 assists and four service aces, while Ashlyn Jones added five assists, seven digs and two aces.
Adams State took control of the opening set with an early run and never surrendered the momentum, taking the frame 25-13. The Grizzlies repeated the score in the second set, closing it with an eight-point run after Tuskegee had pulled within three at 16-13. DeLaRosa served throughout the closing stretch, recording three aces during the run.
The Grizzlies continued to spread the offense around in the third. Nora Conway and Ariel Barrera entered the lineup and each finished with three kills, while Brooklynn Morgan added a kill as Adams State closed out the sweep, 25-16.
The victory gave Adams State its first win of the season and moved the Grizzlies to 1-2.
