ALAMOSA, Colorado — The Adams State University volleyball team battled one of the nation's top teams Tuesday evening inside Plachy Hall, taking Angelo State to four competitive sets before falling 3-1 in its home opener. The Grizzlies dropped the match by scores of 25-21, 25-17, 30-32 and 25-23, moving to 1-4 overall on the young season.
Angelo State entered the match undefeated at 5-0, but Adams State challenged the Rams throughout the night. After falling behind two sets to none, the Grizzlies responded with their strongest offensive performance of the match in the third set, totaling 18 kills and hitting .224 as a team.
During this third set, the Grizzlies truly showed their resiliency outlasting Angelo State 32-30 in a set that featured 25 tie scores and 11 lead changes, keeping the match alive against the undefeated Rams.
The fourth set was equally competitive. Adams State recorded 13 kills and hit .146, staying within striking distance throughout the frame before Angelo State ultimately secured the 25-23 victory and finished the match three sets to one.
Individually, Adams State was led offensively by Aubrey Rothermich, who recorded a match-high 19 kills. Rothermich added four digs and a solo block while finishing with 20.5 points. Lizzie MacIntosh followed suit adding 13 kills and two service aces, while Isa Folau contributed nine kills and 11 digs. Rowan Tribelhorn was efficient offensively, recording six kills on 12 attempts for a .333 hitting percentage.
Directing the Adams State offense was setter Isabella DeLaRosa who finished with 41 assists and added a service ace; while defensively, Ashlyn Jones led the Grizzlies with 16 digs, while Folau finished with 11, and Katie Bauer added four digs and contributed at the net with two block assists.
Overall as a team, the Grizzlies finished the match with 48 kills, 45 assists, four service aces and 53 digs. Adams State also recorded 8 block assists as a team.

Adams State will look to build on its competitive performance as the Grizzlies continue their 2026 season on Friday, September 4. The Grizzlies will travel to Grand Junction, Colorado, to compete in the Volley in the Valley tournament. Adams State will open up against Fairmont State University at 9 a.m. MST before returning to the court later in the day to face Sul Ross State University at 4 p.m. MST. The Grizzlies will continue tournament action with two additional matches Saturday. All four matches will be streamed live on the RMAC Network.
