Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Grizzlies Push Roadrunners To Edge; Lose 2-1 In Overtime

Men's Soccer leads at halftime but falls in overtime

ALAMOSA, Colo. (October 12, 2014) --  While the end result may not satisfy players and fans alike, a highly competitive match between the Adams State University Grizzlies and the Metropolitan State University Roadrunners may prove to the positive momentum head coach Tim Busen is hoping for his squad moving forward.

The Adams State University men's soccer team lost today in their match with the No. 19 Metropolitan State University of Denver Roadrunners, dropping their record to 1-10 overall and 0-8 in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) play. Even though this is their ninth straight loss, this competitive match has the Grizzlies finding a silver lining with today's result.

ASU jumped out to an early lead over MSU Denver at the 25:49 minute mark when Matt Anderson scored a header off an assist from Mario Castro. It was Anderson's first goal of the season. Adams State was able to carry that lead into halftime, leading one of the most polished teams in the conference by a 1-0 margin.

ASU only allowed the Roadrunners to have one shot in the first half, outshooting the opposition 3-1. On the contrary, Metro State did have four corner kicks compared to Adams State's one.

For most of the second half, the heavily favored Roadrunners were at a complete disadvantage against the Grizzlies, finding themselves being out played in every aspect of the game. It was not until the 60:49 minute mark when MSU Denver drew even with ASU, scoring a goal on behalf of striker Josh Belfrage. The goal was assisted by Nolan Barth.  Regulation concluded with the 1-1 margin and extra time was necessary to dictate a winner.

In the end, MSU Denver proved to be too much for Adams State to handle. While the Grizzlies gave the Roadrunners everything they could, the will of the Roadrunners along with unfavorable weather conditions proved to be too much to overcome. Metro State scored the only goal in overtime, winning the match via a goal from Danny Arrubla at the 95:36 minute mark.

Indeed a heartbreaking loss from the Grizzlies; however ASU will need to build off this recent spell of excellent team form to prepare for fellow RMAC conference member Regis University. Regis is currently ranked 8th in the nation with an 8-1 record. Their only loss came against Metro State. The game will be played in Denver on October 17th.
