PUEBLO, Colo. (October 4, 2014) – The game had several characteristics of an upset but with 10 points in the fourth quarter, the No. 2 Colorado State University-Pueblo ThunderWolves pulled ahead to extend their winning streak to 42 regular season games by defeating the Adams State University Grizzlies, 17-7.
The Grizzlies fall to 1-4 overall and 0-3 in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) play with the loss. ASU has now lost their last six meetings against the ThunderWolves.
A defensive battle emerged from the start as both teams went without a first down until late in the first quarter. ASU's initial first down came after a 10-yard rush from quarterback Auston Hillman who followed with a 14-yard rush on the next play. The Grizzlies quickly made their first appearance in CSU-Pueblo territory with a 19-yard Hillman pass to receiver Phil Romero. However the drive was halted with an ASU personal foul and a subsequent interception from Hillman.
As the offense struggled, the Grizzly defense maintained a cap on the high-powered ThunderWolves offense. The defense forced six punts in the opening half along with a Derek Mathiason fumble recovery as CSU-Pueblo neared the redzone. It appeared as if CSU-Pueblo would break the scoreless affair with a field goal in the closing seconds before halftime but Greg O'Donnell's 39-attempt fell short. For the half, ASU limited the ThunderWolves to 122 yards offensively and in the process rendered them scoreless for the half. It marked the first time this season that CSU-Pueblo did not score before halftime.
CSU-Pueblo eventually reached paydirt in the third quarter with a 3 play, 39 yard drive as Chris Bonner completed a 32-yard pass to J.B. Mathews. The Grizzlies responded with an 8 play drive highlighted by a 39-yard reception by Romero. The catch positioned the ball on the CSU-Pueblo 20 yard line but the offense was unable to push further. Unfortunately for the Grizzly faithful the drive resulted in no points as Keating Krauser's 33-yard field goal attempt hit the right upright.
The drought soon ended thanks to a 32-yard touchdown run from Addie Brown with :12 remaining in the third quarter. Brown's second rushing touchdown of the year helped tie the game after Keating Krauser made good on his extra point attempt.
The fourth quarter, however, belonged to the home team as CSU-Pueblo answered with 10 points. O'Donnell converted a 49-yard field goal attempt despite missing his previous four tries. On their next offensive possession, Cameron McDondle bulldozed his way for a one yard touchdown run. Now facing a 17-7 deficit, the Grizzlies were left with 2:57 to produce offensively.
As ASU begin their offensive push, the drive was hampered by injuries at the quarterback spot. With Hillman already sidelined, Lamar McKnight began the drive but was forced out of the game after a five-yard rush. Enter freshman Tom Ross at the helm who completed a 13-yard pass to Denzel McCullum. Ross' appearance was also cut short with an injury on the following play after rushing for seven yards. Having utilized three quarterbacks, Hillman was forced to reenter the game but threw an interception to Ben Estica and therefore brought the comeback attempt to an end.
For the game, Brown finished with 12 carries for 78 yards and one touchdown. The sophomore also had one reception for 26 yards. Hillman was 8-for21 for 118 yards passing with three interceptions while Romero led the team with 58 yards receiving on two catches. Linebacker Wesley Brandon led all players with 12 tackles and a quarterback hit as cornerback Cariel Brooks came through with three pass breakups and two tackles.
Cameron McDondle led the ThunderWolves with 190 yards on the ground off 32 carries. Bonner tallied 170 passing yards with a 13-for-35 performance.
The Grizzlies return home next week for their homecoming game against Chadron State College. That game is slated for a 1:05 p.m. kickoff from Rex Stadium on Oct. 11. Â
