SILVER CITY, N.M. (October 5, 2014) – On Saturday, the Adams State University Grizzlies volleyball team fell 3-1 in a conference tilt with the Western New Mexico University Mustangs.
ASU was defeated 25-20, 25-17, 24-26, 25-21 while hitting .101 for the match. The Grizzlies continue to struggle in conference play and move to 8-8 overall and 3-5 in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) action.
Errors were critical in the loss as ASU tallied 29 on the night. The Grizzlies did avoid a sweep with their 26-24 third set win. The Grizzly third set efforts were led by
Mallory Grimsrud who collected four kills during the set. Also providing offense were
Savannah Smith and
Jourdan Wenzinger with important service aces, helping to increase the ASU lead to five.
Despite leading as late as 21-19 in the fourth and final set, WNMU went on a 6-0 run to end the match and claim the win.
Grimsrud finished with a team-high 12 kills off 21 total attempts while hitting .524. Grimsrud also led the team with five total blocks (one solo).
Leah Nelson and
Nina Mody-Bailey each added eight kills apiece as
Katelyn Schwartz led all players with 36 assists.
Gabrielle Timmen collected 11 digs in defeat.
WNMU's Heather Verrill had a game-high 13 kills and hit .765 for the match. Verrill also added six total blocks (two solo).
After five games on the road, ASU returns to Plachy Hall on Oct. 10 to face Western State Colorado University. The game is slated for a 7:05 p.m. start time and will be broadcasted by KSPK-TV. Live stats will also be provided by the ASU Sports Information department.
