ARVADA, Colo. (November 15, 2014) – In their season finale the Adams State University football team fell 49-34 to the No. 19 Colorado School of Mines Orediggers from the North Area Athletic Complex.
The loss drops ASU's season record to 4-7 overall and 3-6 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC). Mines clinches at least a share of the 2014 RMAC Football Championship with the win and improves to 10-1, 8-1 RMAC.
With both teams battling through snowy conditions, the Grizzlies held a brief 7-6 lead after a 20-yard
Denzel McCullum touchdown reception from
Auston Hillman early in the first quarter. The strength of the Orediggers was quickly realized as Mines responded with 22 unanswered points. CSM's potent offensive arsenal accomplished this feat with three quick drives—none of which elapsed more than 1:14 off the clock. The up-tempo Mines regime resulted in a 28-7 deficit for Adams State going into halftime.
The Grizzlies returned to the gridiron after the break for a highly competitive third quarter. With
Lamar McKnight now at quarterback, the junior transfer engineered an eight play, 75-yard drive resulting in a 43-yard touchdown strike to
Phil Romero. After a pair of Mines touchdowns the quarter ended with a
Nick Diercks one yard touchdown run followed by a successful Romero rush for the two-point conversion. For the quarter, Adams State outscored the Orediggers 15-14.
The Grizzlies would also go on to outscore Mines in the final stanza, 12-7, but the 22 unanswered points in the first half created too large of a hole for head coach
Marty Heaton's squad during his final game with the program.
Mines quarterback Justin Dvorak ended the conference tilt with a game-high 337 yards passing and four touchdowns. Hillman countered with 190 yards passing and three touchdowns. In his final collegiate game,
Justin Kauffman led the Grizzlies with 61 rushing yards on 13 carries while Romero led the receiving corps with 111 yards and a touchdown and a season-high eight catches.
Addie Brown added 28 receiving yards and a pair of touchdowns.
John Flowers led ASU with seven tackles while
Cariel Brooks,
Ryan Holland, and
Demari Reynolds all picked off Dvorak.
