Slow Start Equates To 79-47 Loss For Women's Basketball

Grizzlies now return home for their home opener on Nov. 19

WICHITA FALLS, Texas. (November 15, 2014)—The Adams State University Grizzlies women's basketball team lost today in their final game during the Fourth Annual Ashbrook Classic against the Texas Woman's College Pioneers by a score of 79-47. With today's results, the Grizzlies return to Alamosa with a 0-2 record on the young season.
 
The Pioneers controlled the game as early as the tip off, as they rumbled to score the game's first 18 points. In the first half, ASU had difficulty getting their shots to convert, shooting from the field 3-33(9.1%). It wasn't until 9:37 left in the first half until the Grizzlies converted their first field goal thanks to Lena Jaycox who drained a three-point shot to finally put ASU on the scoreboard.  The Pioneers led by as many as 28 points in the first half. For TWC, Ashely Salazar had a phenomenal showing in the opening stanza. She scored 12 points off 3-5 shooting from the field and went 2-4 from beyond the three point line. She also posted two assists and one steal in the first half. TWC led the Grizzlies going into halftime, 36-8.
 
TWC dominance in the first half was highlighted specifically in the paint, where they scored 14 of their 36 points. In comparison, ASU managed to sink one basket in the paint in the entire first half. The Grizzlies did have eight turnovers in the first half, but only allowed three points to benefit the opposing team.
 
In the second half, the Grizzlies were able to get some of their offensive mojo rekindled. Mariah Gonzales scored all of her 13 points after halftime, shooting 4-9 from the field of play, while shooting a perfect 3-3 from beyond on the arc. Desiree Anderson also posted seven of her nine points in the second half. With their offensive unit having found a rhythm, the Grizzlies were able to chip away at the staggering Pioneer lead. The Grizzly defensive unit allowed TWC to score 43 points in the second half however the offensive unit netted 39 points in comparison. TWC won the game at the end of regulation 79-47.
 
The Grizzlies now return home to host McMurry University on Nov. 19 at Plachy Hall for a 5:30 p.m. tipoff. This will be the women's home opener of the 2014-15 season.
