Regular Season Begins with 77-62 Defeat For Women's Basketball

Desiree Anderson leads ASU with 19 points

ALAMOSA, Colo. (November 15, 2014)—The Adams State University Grizzlies women's basketball team lost Friday night in their first game of the Fourth Annual Ashbrook Classic  against host school, the  Midwestern State University Mustangs, by a score of 77-62. With the loss, the Grizzlies fall to 0-1 on the season and will look to improve in Saturday's matchup against Texas Woman's College.
 
The Grizzlies started the game hot, nailing three of their first four, three-point field goals in the first 10 minutes of the game. After a three-point shot by Desiree Anderson and a lay-up from Mariah Gonzales, the Grizzlies led 15-9 with less than 9:56 left in the first half. The Mustangs retaliated with a 12-0 run in response in four minutes of play and never turned back. The Mustangs with their new found momentum, rolled through the remainder of the first half, leading by 36-28 margin.
 
The Mustangs led by as many as 12 points in the first half. A big contributor to their lead came from the benefit of points scored off turnovers. Consequently the Mustangs had 12 points off turnovers. MWSU shot from the field at a solid 42.3% in comparison to ASU's 34.6%. The Grizzlies had a 40% success mark from beyond the arc compared to the Mustangs 35.7%. 
 
The second half proved to be much of the same narrative as the first. With 12:27 left in regulation, the Mustangs led by as many as 23 points and carried that lead to a victory.
 
For the Grizzlies, Anderson followed up from her solid performance a week ago with another 19 point performance. Mariah Gonzales, who is returning to full health, scored 13 points in 23 minutes of play. Gonzales led the team with five steals. Emilie Klint also netted 13 points for the Grizzlies .ASU was unable to stop the play of Andrea Carter and Shatoia Gober. Together the duo scored 33 points for the Mustangs.
 
The Grizzlies wrap up play tonight at the Ashbrook Classis as they clash with Texas Women's College at 5 p.m.
