WBB | Anderson Scores 18 In Loss To Fort Lewis

Desiree Anderson has a game-high 18 points during 71-46 loss

DURANGO, Colo. (December 13, 2014)—The Adams State University women's basketball team lost this evening (Dec. 13) their Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) match-up against the Fort Lewis College Skyhawks by a 71-46 score. With the loss, Adams State has now dropped three consecutive RMAC games, making their season record stand at 0-7, 0-3 in RMAC play. The Skyhawks improve to 4-3 on the season, 1-2 in RMAC contests.

The Grizzlies were able to keep things relatively competitive in the first half, mainly in part to their successful shooting from the charity stripe. In the first half the Grizzlies shot 9-13 from the free throw line which made up for a poor statistical night shooting the ball from the field. ASU shot 4-30 (13.3%) in the first half compared to the Skyhawks who sank 9 of their 28 (32.1%) shots. Even with the Grizzlies were not having success offensively, the point margin was kept relatively close.

The Grizzlies began the game on a 6-0 run and led by as many as seven in the first half. The Skyhawk offense, led by the combination of Lynette Hepa and Michelle Tuner, began to find some momentum. With the Grizzlies up 10-3, the lead soon disappeared. Turner, who scored 11 points in the first half, assisted the Skyhawks in recapturing the lead as the team scored the next 14 points. FLC entered halftime leading ASU, 25-17.

For the first half, the Grizzlies were led offensively by the play of Emily Klint and Mariah Gonzales. Klint scored five points while Gonzales led the Grizzlies with six points and was 4-6 from the charity stripe.

In the second half of regulation, FLC used the momentum they found in the waning minutes of the first half to score 46 points. While Adams State's offensive unit had a better shooting efficiency rate at 25.6%, they could not keep up with FLC's outstanding 53.8% shooting from the field. The Grizzlies scored 29 points in the second half; however they could not overcome the offensive onslaught of the Skyhawks that led by as many of 23 points.

For the game, Desiree Anderson led the Grizzlies offensively scoring 18 points off 6-of-19 shooting. Anderson was a perfect 5-5 from the charity stripes, while also converting one 3-point basket. Anderson scored 15 of her points in the second half.

The Grizzlies now prepare for the likes of RMAC foes in Western State Colorado University on Dec. 20 and Colorado Mesa University on Dec 21. Both games will begin at 5:30 p.m. MT.
